Borrachas and the Practice of the Daily Post
I have been following the work of Borrachas for a couple of years. I posted his work when I was curating at Cross Connect. He is very disciplined. He says he will post every day and he does.
I am fascinated by the practice some artists follow of posting every day. I understand that it forces you to keep working, but it also means that you are inevitably going to post things are not that great. Artists like Borrachas do not care. For them it is far more important to make and post things.
As a viewer then, how do we judge them as an artist? By the weakest pieces or the strongest? Or do we balance between the two?
Maybe it doesn’t matter and is just a feature of the digital age. After all painters like Cezanne, Matisse , Bacon and others routinely destroyed work they did not feel was up to their standards. If they had saved it and it was indeed not as good as their best work would it diminish their overall stature?
I think not. Artists will be judged by their best work. And it is a feature of today’s world where some artists can and do post almost every single thing they do and we can see it easily. As viewers we can look with an open mind and if it happens to be beautiful enjoy it, and then show appreciation.
Today Borrachas made something beautiful.
