My Grandfather would have been 109 today- which means he’d have been 8 when he witnessed the #BostonMolassesFlood in January 1919. It’s a story he’d tell us as kids but we weren’t always sure was true- just seemed too crazy. . . He went on to be a Foreman at the #ForeRiverShipyard in Quincy, building battleships such as the #USSMassachusetts. Among some old photos I found a letter postmarked the day the ship was launched in 1941, as well as an old slide rule and some unused War Ration stamps. . . One bit of history I wish I could ask him now is if he knew James Kilroy, who some believe to be the creator of the “#KilroyWasHere” graffiti seen during World War II. Kilroy was an inspector at the Fore River Shipyard and it’s thought he would scribble the meme while making his rounds. Seen by thousands of soldiers and sailors on outgoing ships the doodle and phrase “Kilroy was Here” would be copied and spread far and wide throughout the war. #igersnewengland #worldwar2 #worldwar2historyandinstagram #igersmass #massachusetts_igers (at Fore River Shipyard) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0zPw7nlwnV/?igshid=uptr3xyapdsk
My Great-Grandfather with the Cambridge Fire Department sometime in the early 1900’s. #OnThisDay 100 years ago his station was one that was called to respond to the #BostonMolassesFlood. The story of the immense sticky wave flooding #Boston’s North End was one my Grandfather would tell us when we were kids- back then we weren’t sure if it was a tall tale, it just seemed to incredible. #igersboston #igboston617 #igersnewengland (at Great Molasses Flood) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsqDLbQAhRe/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=xng6f1pwrpij
