Fernando Botero’s deep knowledge of art history, particularly of the Western canon, has been critical to the development of his artistic career. In his early twenties, the artist traveled to Europe, where he intensively studied the work of Italian Renaissance masters Uccello and Masaccio, as well as the Spanish masters Velázquez and Goya. In his work, Botero synthesizes elements of art history with inspiration he draws from his Colombian identity and uses his aesthetic vocabulary to depict and give life to his signature characters. The concept of volume appeared early on in his work and has continued to capture his interest throughout his career.
