Jim needs Bones, plain and simple, but he was never expecting to want to be with him so badly that he would marry him, much less be the one to propose. It came as a shock even to him, but when he saw the ring in the shop, he knew Bones had to have it, and probably wouldn't accept it except as a marriage proposal. 

So he did. And he falls more in love with Bones every day. The long work hours are difficult on them, but when they see each other, it's as if it's only been a few hours.

In their general verse, Jim's been wanting to get even closer to Bones for a while, but seeing as he's an old divorced grump who doesn't even want to go out with women, much less men, he didn't think he had a chance. And then one night they got drunk, and that's all history.

right now, Jim is really confused. They had started planning a life together, children even, with the help of their lover Christine Chapel, but when Bones left for shore leave and never talked to him for his entire leave, it ripped a hole in Jim's heart that three weeks of crying, punching things, and burying himself in work still haven't solved. He hasn't stopped loving Bones, but he's really hurt right now, and in turn, seems to be hurting everyone else.

Jim hesitated outside of the door to his first class of the day. It was a general lecture on the importance of the Prime Directive - which was fine, he knew the damn thing off by heart now anyway.

No, the problem was that he hadn't come back to the room he shared with Bones last night because he had ended up getting the crap beaten out of him. He'd ended up passing out on a bench on campus and waited until Bones had already left before getting a shower and getting dressed. He felt guilty about waking his friend up almost every week in the middle of the night needing medical attention.

The moment he walked in, he knew Bones had seen him. He looked like shit, his jaw and neck covered in bruises, his lip split and he was pretty sure he had a black eye.
