Chapter Six: Switched! Part I

Story Synopsis: (AU) Autumn Everdeen and Dawn Mellark meet at an archery and survival skills camp. Even though their resemblance is uncanny, they've never met before, and they don't exactly like one another. Through a series of pranks and hijinks, they are forced together, and they bond, only to discover a secret...they're sisters! But not just sisters, identical twins! Each desiring to spend time with their other parent, and possibly get the idiots, who so obviously still love one another, back together, Autumn and Dawn come up with a cunning ruse. Based on "The Parent Trap."

Chapter Summary: The twins formulate a plan to switch places, and Autumn, posing as Dawn, jets off to California to see Peeta. Will she be able to keep up the act?

Chapter Snippet: As she settled into the car, Autumn couldn’t believe they were actually doing this, but there was no going back now. And she was excited to see Dad. However, a small part of her also wanted to get back at him for separating them and leaving her. She balled her fists at her sides and set her jaw.

Mom and Dad are so in for it... 

But there was more to this ruse than simply spending time with their estranged parents and payback. Dawn and she had discussed how at some agreed-upon point they were going to drop the bomb, and Mom and Dad would have to meet up to un-switch them. That would be the only thing to do. They would have to see each other again, face-to-face, and maybe, just maybe, sparks would fly again.

If they were really lucky, perhaps fire would catch…

Snippet of Chapter Five: Sisters Part II: 

“What I’d really like to know is how this whole thing started anyway?” demanded Miss Trinket. Both girls remained silent. “Oh goodie, I get to guess. Hmm, someone stole the other’s boyfriend, perhaps?”

Both of them made faces.

“Sure, we’re teenage girls; that’s all it could possibly be about,” said Dawn under her breath.

“What was that, Miss Mellark?”

“Nothing,” mumbled Dawn.  

“My, aren’t we sassy,” said Miss Trinket. In her chair, Autumn snorted.

“Something to say, Miss Everdeen?” Miss Trinket set her eyes on Autumn, who contritely looked down at her folded hands and shook her head.

“Well, then,” Miss Trinket turned her attention to the counselors, “what shall we do about these two lumps of coal?”

Coal. Seriously? Why did she keep referring to them as coal? It was pretty insulting.

“Counselor Mason,” said Miss Trinket, addressing her shorter, harsher counterpart. “You’re the expert on…punishment. What say you? What should we do about our two tempestuous teens?”

What would it be? Dawn wondered. She and Autumn were already on thin ice prior to this very public, horrific incident, and now she was letting Counselor Mason, of all people, decide their fate.

This was bad. Really bad.

All eyes were on Counselor Mason, aside from Dawn, who was staring at her shoes, and Autumn, who was staring at her hands. They glimpsed one another, then Counselor Mason out of the corner of their eyes.

Counselor Mason’s lips curled up into a malicious smile. “I say we let the punishment fit the crime.”
