In this video: GroundSparks’s documentary film, “It’s Elementary,” is about educating teachers about how to instruct students about gay issues in schools. The film was produced in 1996, and since then GroundSparks has released other documentaries about raising awareness about gay and lesbian family discrimination as well.
Topics: Sexual preferences, awareness
Personal Take: Considering that this film is earlier than the other content listed here, this is truly a groundbreaking documentary. I was personally surprised at how the students handled it, although some students’ comments were questionable (but that is what the film and the teachers are for). A follow up version of the documentary notes that before 1996, less than 1% of schools were talking about gay and lesbian issues. In 2007, this went up to 29%; this is an enormous increase, but obviously there is room for improvement
In this video the Fair Education Act is discussed. This act was passed in 2011 in California, which mandates K-12 schools to include gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender history in classrooms.
Topics: Awareness, sexual orientation, gender identity
Personal Take: A step in the right direction. I agree with many of the points in this video as far as defending the legislation. Not having a dialogue about this history does foster an atmosphere for harassment and bullying. Again, the argument that this should be taught at home is challenged as parent knowledge is commonly biased or limited in scope. However, an important side to consider is how this history is presented. Is is written by or from the perspective of a dominant textbook company or from LGBTQ communities? Critics and some teachers argue that there are few resources for these lessons, yet a quick google search suggests otherwise.
