On Bounty Lady, Sharon Chan and Kate Tsui
Being 110% in line with my Elena Kong kick, I picked up Bounty Lady again, after I gave up on it in a fit at episode 11 or 13 (I don’t remember). I know why I gave it up, because I did in fact think it was insulting to women, particularly at the point when I put it down.
I generally still maintain that, but you know, Elena Kong. So I was like what the heck it’s late, and i won’t be able to process things to fast if I’m sleepy and tired, so I won’t find the show so insulting. I just skimmed along and watched for the Elena Kong parts and managed to finish the rest of Bounty Lady.
I guess when you’re sleepy and tired, I really don’t process things as fast. But can I say that the tricks that Louis Yuen pulled to try and get together with Sharon Chan was eyeroll1. Then the trick Dayo Wong pulled to get together with Kate Tsui was eyeroll2. Although the trick Benz Hui pulled to get together with Elena Kong should have been eyeroll3, I didn’t quite roll my eyes because I was actually watching their scenes, and Elena had an emotional scene right before the scene at the monastery. Honestly though this trick is so overused, but Elena’s speech, sigh. (I love her acting.)
Honestly, for the most part I felt that Benz Hui was a perverted sleazy old man. I am uncertain that I would have supported Benz Hui to win Best Supporting Actor. I don’t think I would have, because I do think many people did great jobs that year, and come on, this is not his best role. To be fair, my opinion of Elena was not positive (but they were funny, so hey /shrugs).
I will complain about the age difference between Elena and Benz. Maybe it’s double standards, but I don’t think so, because the age difference is like 25 years give or take. Twenty five. Twenty five!!! I don’t like it when Elena acts opposite Damian Lau either, so...
The irony is that this is totally fine by many standards, but when Elena acts opposite Kenneth Ma, with a three year age gap, everyone gets up in arms. I have no issues with Elena and Kenneth as a pair.
On another note, I am so sick and tired of Sharon Chan. I don’t hate her, but i’m definitely not her fan either. But because I’m on an Elena Kong kick, it makes it so painfully obvious how much they act together.
Line Walker. Elena Kong is Sharon Chan’s older sister
Ultimate Addiction. Elena Kong and Sharon Chan kind of somewhat maybe fight over Ben Wong.
Bounty Lady. Elena Kong is Sharon Chan’s aunt.
The same applies to Kate Tsui. Ultimate Addiction/Bounty Lady/Smooth Talker. The reason why I don’t feel it as much is because Kate doesn’t quite act opposite Elena while Sharon generally does.
Honestly it’s SO frustrating, because I’m not a fan of both Sharon and Kate. So like...ugh. At least if you’d give me some other female leads I wouldn’t have developed a visceral reaction this fast. /so done. (not their fault btw, it’s mostly because I’m overdosing on Elena Kong shows, and I don’t feel like Sharon and Elena have fabulous chemistry or anything that offsets the sheer amount of Sharon)
I will also say that for some reason many of these Sharon/Kate/Elena shows have age gaps which do not look good. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that they’re disturbing (though Kate and Dayo really borderline disturbing). Kate/Dayo Wong. Sharon/Louis Yuen (though I do think she looks younger than she really is, and my impression of Louis Yuen is older). Sharon/Ben Wong. Like can someone tell me why on earth would you do something like that?
The thought that Chong Wai Kin has a hand in SSSS makes me reconsider my decision to watch it (after the disaster that was Ultimate Addiction).
The most powerful thing in human relationships is the ability to say no.

You can admit it now… The Bounty made you stay right?
I-....How did you know?
