your tags about john winchester and relationship between john and dean is PERFECTION. it is *exactly* how i’ve felt about him since the very beginning. i understand people hating him. but i never did. i think dean both loved and hated his father. the way i think most of us feel about our parents. and i think people forget that john was just as traumatized lose ng his wife and did everything in his power to protect his boys but went about it the wrong way. plus, our parents did not know what they were doing was wrong and we’re only now learning how to properly do things and raise our kids right. anyways, sorry to word vomit all over you. 😆😆☺️

i do have to admit that, while understanding the insane amount of trauma that made john winchester the man he was and that his sons have a complicated relationship involving both love and hate for their father, i also desperately want to kneecap the man with a tire iron haha

i absolutely think that john loved his boys, but i also think he was one of the worst things to ever happen to them. and that's a weird needle to thread, but the show does it really, really well.

that said, i also don't think that a happy ending for dean and sam exists with them writing john out of their lives (or killing him, like i've seen in some fic tbh). i think they really did want a loving relationship with him, which is maybe a really hard thing to reconcile as an outsider looking in for most of the fandom. especially since i'm just not sure john winchester as we see him in seasons one and two of the show is capable of providing that kind of love or stability for his kids anymore. which sucks, honestly. he's just this raw nerve ending and all he can feel and inflict on others is pain. he's got all this trauma and no framework with which to talk about it, let alone heal from it -- not even for the sake of his own children.

i'd go so far as to say kripke's first real crack at taking on how bad toxic masculinity is might've actually been john winchester, come to think of it. dude's a massive indictment regarding how men have traditionally been taught to deal with deep emotional pain, to the point where he robs his kids of their childhood and quite literally breaks his home through pride and selfishness.

kripke, the overall writers room, and JDM did a hell of a job creating the character though, and he's really fun to watch, even if i also want beat him to a pulp haha

(i'm also very curious to see how the winchesters takes us from a john that by design needs to be likable to the john that JDM embodied)
