Here's what I want to know; Ben has never even hinted that he plays Sherlock as romantically interested in John. So what on earth was he thinking in the Sherlockisagirlsname scene? Was Moffat like "you need to be a breath away from kissing him" and Ben was "can do!" Or not?

well, to be honest i would like to believe that a certain number of people working on the show are absolutely sure it’s is going to happen apart from Benedict and Martin so to speak help them understand their characters and their relationships whilst acting through it, instead of just springing up the idea on the first day. and that all of this is kept a secret and one day they’ll reveal it and everyone had already saw it coming and that we’ll finally see actual footage of Johnlock being officially an onscreen couple. 

but that’s what i’d like to believe. although, i do think that Benedict and Martin are definitely aware of the countless romantic and sexual undertones between their characters but i also think that they’re either blatantly ignoring it or are just playing along with it. also since day one, there was never an official notice of “Sherlock and John are not only best friends but are in every way attracted to each other and are both immensely aware of it”, they never hinted on specifically playing their characters as each others’ romantic interests on the show because to them, they weren’t.

but since you asked about that specific moment, i think that during the script reading, everyone noticed how the entire conversation sounded close to revealing a love confession but because of the line “Sherlock is a girl’s name”, they laughed it off as a great way to build suspense for the show. in other words, internally screaming because: why.
