The Vanishing Lady of Box Tunnel
Brunel's Box Tunnel - Box- Near Bath
History- The Box Tunnel is a railway tunnel dug through Box Hill and is a significant structure on the Great Western Main Line. Construction began in 1836, and the tunnel opened in 1841. At the time of its completion, it was the longest railway tunnel in existence at 1.83miles and it remains in daily use, 180 years later. Ammunition was stored near the tunnel during World War II, reusing mine workings. There was also a large human cost to its ambitious construction, with more than 100 deaths occurring during the project. There has also been some fatal accidents there and a mystery derailment in 1893 Legend has it that when it came to designing it, he used his cunning engineering skills to add a personal touch. Brunel is said to have aligned the tunnel so that the light would shine through at sunrise just once a year - on his birthday.
Hauntings - Eastern end - February 2011 Four men working in an ultrasonics gang all heard a female moaning at the mouth of the east exit. As the noise grew louder, they though it a joke, until one man shone his torch up the hill and the party spotted a woman in a nightdress looking down at them - she vanished before their eyes. When they reported the sighting, they were told that the figure had been seen previously by a group of six men. The sounds of a phantom train is also said to echo along the tracks in this tunnel.
