I grew up in a small town with limited cultural opportunities. We didn’t have television until I was about seven. The only movie theater lasted just a short time. High school plays and band concerts were the extent of the arts on offer.
Going away to university greatly broadened my horizons. The university had a good music program, and I remember going to a Christmas concert there. A soloist…
So we found this today. It feels a bit like discovering a super special vintage find at the flea market. Although, the book itself is only 5 years old, Bob Dylan’s classic has been around since 1974. And to put pictures to his beautiful lyrics make the old new again, especially for the little ones. What a great way to introduce the kids to the works of one of the best song writers ever.
Paul Rogers, an award-winning illustrator (who’s also responsible for illustrating Wynton Marsalis's ABZ book) was asked by Dylan to interpret his words using his signature mid-century style. And so with Dylan’s music and lyrics floating in his head, Rogers delivers a Forever Young that is as timeless as the song itself. The story is follows a little boy on his journey as he follows his dream, making music, meeting and befriending strangers. Along the way Rogers peppers the book with "visual shout-outs to Dylan's career" (they're all explained in an endnote)."
OH. And through the magic of clicks we also discovered other books illustrated to Dylan’s songs. I definitely feel a collection coming on.
Here’s to the spirit of youth:
May you grow up to be righteous
May you grow up to be true
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you
May you always be courageous
Stand upright and be strong
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young
