To Hallmark or not to Hallmark
If you follow this account I’m sure you’ve heard what’s been happening in the land of Hallmark and advertising over the past week or so. If not, it boils down to Hallmark flip-flopping on whether or not anti-LGBTQ+ bigots have a say in what they promote and produce.
#boycottHallmark and #boycottHallmarkChannel have been trending and GLAAD spoke out about Hallmark’s decision to pull ads featuring a lesbian couple’s wedding from the wedding planning site Zola.
Saturday Night Live had what I thought was a nice skewering in a Hallmark dating sketch, too.
This isn’t the first time Hallmark has been accused of homophobia, either. In 2013, Hallmark sold a holiday sweater ornament that read “Don we now out FUN apparel!” Here’s an excerpt from the L.A. Times of the company defending it’s decision:
...Hallmark pointed out that the lyrics for “Deck the Halls” were translated from the Gaelic way back when. So the “gay” of the 1800s isn’t the “gay” of 2013. Such “multiple meanings,” the company said in a statement, “could leave our intent open to misinterpretation.”
Yeah, wouldn’t want to come off as a decent and progressive company! I mean, sure, they have cards celebrating gay weddings and transitioning, but that’s just because they want our queer money, not because they want us to exist. It’s the same reason they reversed their decision to remove the commercials; they want our money.
It’s for these reasons this blog will no longer be reviewing Hallmark movies. I can’t, in good conscience, provide a platform for a company that despises my community and yet seeks to profit from them.
Luckily, Netflix and other streaming services have been stepping in to fill the giant representation gaps Hallmark has left in its wake and I will move my focus to those films and welcome the diversity shown alongside the kooky plotlines!
As always, please feel free to let me know if there are specific films you’d like me to review. Have a wonderful December, keep yourselves safe, and for goodness sake, don’t read comments!
And to Hallmark and One Million Moms: Go fuck yourselves!
Did you hear about the same-sex ad controversy on the Hallmark channel? I understand the pressure that Hallmark may be facing from a big part of their fanbase but I'm extremely disappointed that they gave in to the pressure to remove the ad. You've always preached that this channel needs to promote LGBTQ+ relationships more and by removing these ads, it goes to show what this company ultimately stands for. It's making it hard to support their content even though I love watching their movies.
Ironic you sent this message when you did because I got it DIRECTLY after reading the news.
It’s horrible and disappointing and I just don’t know if I can support Hallmark anymore. And that really is unfortunate because I love Good Witch and I LOVE me a good Hallmark Christmas movie but my allegiance is now going to Lifetime, whose movies don’t nail the holiday mark QUITE the same, but have diversity for days and are working hard towards representing The LGBTQIA+ community in better ways.
just so y’all know
The Hallmark Channel (yeah, the one that provides those fun Christmas movies) pulled an ad feature two women getting married because their PDA “violated their guidelines”. They kissed. At a wedding.
Also, a similar ad featuring a straight couple was not pulled!
So yeah, if you were planning on watching Hallmark movies, here’s a good reason not to.
no one needs to tell me to boycott hallmark... asking me to boycott yet another horribly written christmas themed romance where the two hets both love cats and got wounded together in "the war" is like asking me to abstain from drinking cockroach milk
“We will no longer be advertising on Hallmark,” said Zola’s chief marketing officer
Peter Wade at Rolling Stone:
Yielding to a conservative group’s objections, the Hallmark Channel has decided to drop four commercials for the wedding planning website Zola because they showed brides kissing each other.
Hallmark told the New York Times that they do not allow ads “that are deemed controversial” and that the women showing “public displays of affection” violated the channel’s policies, even though commercials showing a bride and groom kissing are still allowed to run on the channel.
The channel pulled the ads after One Million Moms, a conservative group that is a part of the American Family Association, published a petition online that had close to 25,000 signatures as of Friday. Zola was then notified this week that four of their six ads would not air.
“The decision not to air overt public displays of affection in our sponsored advertisement, regardless of the participants, is in line with our current policy, which includes not featuring political advertisements, offensive language, R-rated movie content and many other categories,” a Hallmark Channel spokesman told the Times.
The stated mission of the group who won out here, One Million Moms, is to “fight against indecency.”
Zola said it disagrees with Hallmark’s decision and said it will no longer run ads on the channel. “Hallmark approved a commercial where a heterosexual couple kissed. All kisses, couples and marriages are equal celebrations of love and we will no longer be advertising on Hallmark,” said Zola’s chief marketing officer Mike Chi.

Hallmark Channel, Hallmark Movies and Mysteries, and Hallmark should be boycotted over their capitulation to anti-LGBTQ+ extremists such as One Million Moms over the decision to pull an ad featuring a lesbian couple kissing! #BoycottHallmark #BoycottHallmarkChannel
