The boyish type is matter-of-fact, slender, and loose-jointed. There is about her an air of independent sturdiness. We aim in gowning her to give warmth to her slenderness, and ease to her carriage. The freedom to wear horizontals, plaids and sturdy materials belongs to the boyish type.
From Marie Cary, Style and the Woman, 1924, a book written for store clerks so they would know how to “gown” women. I love that “gown” is a verb. Cary distinguished this type from the Athletic type who was bigger, but they both were supposed to wear “sturdy” things. Still, like all the types, she does get to wear evening dress, so I will feature that next Wednesday.
