Boy Soldier

I had a chance to meet this little friend, Max, along Sint Peiterstraat at the square in front of Oude Minderbroederskerk Catholic Church. He was dressed in a dated military uniform with combat gears, jeep and truck owned by his family for display on a car-free Sunday in Maastricht city, Netherlands. He agreed to pose in the driving seat of the jeep for me to take a picture.

I took another picture of Max standing beside the jeep. He looked fantastic in the war-washed uniform with the combat outfit. He was 10 years old, the same age as my son, Elijah, at the time I took this picture.

I am thankful for the opportunity to take pictures of random people; you may not have the chance to meet again and that is what made these pictures memorable and unique!

Why I Decided To Choose “Lil’ Tommy” As The Title For My Game

I have finally decided to call my game “Lil’ Tommy”. After doing research, I have found out that “Lil’ Tommy” would be the best name to go with, as there would be not copyright issues, unlike other titles I had came up with. 

Breakdown: I was originally going to call my game “Little Tommy” although I feel like the flow isn’t quite as nice as “Lil’ Tommy”. The reason I have chosen to call my game Lil’ Tommy is all down to the connotations the title gives off. The story-line of the game is about a 14-year-old boy soldier who has picked up the courage to fight for his country, although technically it is illegal at his age. Tommy lost his parents in the titanic at a young age, and was raised by his grandparents. Growing up he was always fascinated with the war and was always amazed at the propaganda around him - of how he though he would make so many new friends, be back by Christmas, and overall become a real man!”

Swimming Pool

No need to be a man

You’re too cool for the rules.

  Crowded streets

Fear streaked faces

Don’t play by the rules?

That’s fine,

You’re dead.

  Boyfriend break up

Versus, mother got shot.

Twenty one gifts for Christmas

Versus, their first AK-47.

  We sit back and laugh.

While bullets fly past their faces

On a daily basis.

We move in the open freely

Casually

While one foot out of place

They are left for the dogs.

  “We’re only sixteen, what do you expect us to do?”

Their only eight,

And they’re paying their dues.

  This is us versus them.
