Being with Gunmax was all about... Reading between the lines. When you feel like you were getting closer to understanding him, Gunmax will do something completely unpredictable. He obviously isn’t comfortable with anyone being too close, and you want to respect his space. He just needs time, you tell yourself, this is all so new to him. He probably feels so much more than a human, you rationalize, because his reasoning is an adult level while his feelings are just so new.
You know he cares. He wouldn’t go out of his way to make time for you, check up on how you’re doing, defend his relationship with you to his higher ups, if he didn’t care. But part of you feels like he is more interested in protecting his fragile feelings than actually being with you.
In front of his colleagues, he’ll play off your relationship as a hit or miss. Off and on. As if you two hadn’t been going steady for five months. You allow him to talk it off like it’s no big deal, like his attention doesn’t mean the world to you, because you know you shouldn’t get too attached. He’s still a giant robot officer with one purpose in life. His point of creation doesn’t revolve around you.
But then, in the quiet moments when you two are finally able to be alone, Gunmax will just watch you. He seems to soak up every ounce of you he can get while he has time for romance between shifts. You fidget and squirm under his attention, not sure how a machine possibly thinks or processes the nuances in human appearance, but Gunmax will brush your hair away from your cheek. He’ll lean down for a kiss. Rest his forehead against yours.
Gunmax opens his mouth like he wants to say something, a tense expression on his bared face, but he can never seem to find the words. You want to say something. “I love you” or “You mean the world to me”, but you wonder if that will just push him further into his shell.
In the moments you’re alone, you think maybe he’s more confused about his feelings than you are.
