You’re a life saver for the Brazilian face claims, btw. But I was wondering you and your family have any specific things you do that are completely normal in your day-to-day life? I have a character who’s Brazilian and I need them to be authentic(as possible), and articles aren’t really all reliable. Your state or region doesn’t matter(I’m still doing outlining stuff so nothing is set in stone regarding her background). Thank you! I rlly appreciate it.
List of Brazilian habits to help you with your Brazilian characters, by winterhelps
Hey! Thank you, I'm glad I can help you guys :) This was an interesting ask for sure haha I was a bit out of ideas but some people helped me and I have to thank them! If you have a specific topic that you have any questions, please let me know that I'd love help you. The list will be under the cut!
Hygiene: Brazilians take at least one shower per day, but it is usual for us to take one in the morning and another at night. And depending on the day (if it's too hot, for example), we can also take a shower right after coming home from somewhere in the middle of the day. And we brush our teeth around 3 times a day.
Watching soap operas with the family: soap operas are very popular here. They air from monday to friday (or saturday) and some families have the tradition to gather together in the living room to watch them (the most populars usually start at 9pm but there are others starting at 6pm and 7pm).
Watching soccer games: Brazilians are addicted to soccer. Not all of us (I'm not), but most of us. And we have soccer championships during all year (teams compete in regional, national and international championships), so this's something very present in our lives. Games happen on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays and lots of families have the tradition to watch the games together (at home or in a bar). We are very competitive, specially with the rival team from the same city (our team can be in the 15th place, but if the rival is in the 16th we are happy).
Chatting via Whatsapp: we don't use iMessage or SMS to chat, we use Whatsapp here (around 120 million brazilians have an account). And every Brazilian family have a family group chat, that's a must.
Lunch: this's more common in smaller cities, but some families have the habit of coming home around 12pm to have lunch together. And we don't like to eat snacks for lunch (a sandwich, for example). I always see people online talking about eating an avocado toast for lunch and for me this's totally an afternoon snack. A common Brazilian lunch is rice with beans, salad and a meat (chicken or red meat).
Having a cup of coffee after lunch: it's self explanatory, but we usually have a (small, in the size of an ltalian espresso) cup of coffee after lunch.
"Churrasco de domingo": churrasco is the brazilian barbecue and it's almost a tradition to gather all the family together (parents, siblings, grandparents, uncles, cousins) on Sundays to eat churrasco. It's not every Sunday, of course, but it's something that happen with some frequency. And it's almost an event because there are lots of food and beer and music and it's amazing.
Eating fresh food and drinking fresh juice: this's a tropical country, so we have lots of vegetables and fruits available here for cheap (compared to countries that have to export these things, at least).
Living with parents in your 20s: not everyone does this, but it's not a shame for us to be still living with your parents in your 20s, specially if you're still in college. And we don't care to take lifts from our parents at that age (i'm 20 and my mom always prefer to pick me up from parties than for me to take an uber).
Greeting people when you pass by them: we don't do this with every single person that pass by us, but I always greet doormen, bus drivers, my neighbours or people I know. Sometimes we stop to chat a little bit, but it's not required. And when we meet someone, we usually greet with a kiss or two (or even a hug).
Expect sympathy from other people: to give short or rude answers to other people is considered very unpolite here. We are people pleasers compared to people from other countries and things that european/asian/north americans don't consider to be rude can be seen as rude here (i don't have an example right now but it's very common for brazilians to travel and talk about this).
Don't put our feet up in bed or sofa if we have our shoes on: it's self explanatory, but if you do this your mom is probably gonna ask you to take off your shoes.
Waxing: Brazilian wax is called Brazilian wax for a reason.
Manicure and Pedicure: i'm not sure if going to the salon is usual in other countries, but that are lots of women that go every week to get a manicure. It's not everyone that does this (bc it costs money) but there are small neighbourhood salons that aren't that expensive.
Iron clothes: i don't know if this is usual in other countries, but we iron nearly every piece of clothing we have.
Drinking chimarrão: this is specific from my state (Rio Grande do Sul). We have this "herbal drink" called chimarrão and it's very common of us to sit with family or friends to drink it while talking and hanging out (you prep it and just keep filling with hot water after it). My grandparents love to drink it right after waking up, but people like to sit in parks or in their own garden to drink it during the afternoon.
