What is after?
I am a Jew in Diaspora, before anything else. I view the world through the lens of Judaism. For me, it is questions that defines who we are. It is the most central practice of our faith. For those of us who no longer know our tribe, because of the various forces acted on our people, we say we are the Tribe of Israel - the children of Isaac who are named for literally wrestling and struggling. It is in our blood to ask and question.
I have never gotten a constructive answer or even a realistic one to my question: “you get what you want tomorrow. Israel is unmade. It’s not a country anymore.”
what comes after? Where do the people go? What happens to the Jews in the world?
65% of the Jews in Israel have no tie to Europe at all. They are descended from diasporic Jews in North Africa and Western Asia. They are from the families who were always in what is Israel - fewer than the rest. Most of the are descendants of people who have fled. From Iraq, Yemen, Iran, Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria. From the pogroms and dispossession. Jews from the European diaspora are better known, but what few people talk about is how many people were murdered by their neighbors when they returned home after surviving the holocaust - one reason Poland has outlawed talking about Polish complicity.
World wide, Jews who have no connection to Israel are being harassed or terrorized. I’m a duel citizen of Portugal - and there, in a country with 5000 Jews, people protest that we are causing a housing crisis. Crazy shit.
This is a thought experiment. You get your wish, Israel is no more. What happens to the people. Where do they go?
