A Message to Shaun White
The streak is alive! This past X Games in Aspen was my 8th year in a row announcing snowboarding for the winter X Games. But that’s not the only X Games streak I have going on right now. I’m also currently holding the record for announcing skateboarding for 13 straight years at summer X as well! But, enough about me, lets talk about the snowboarding at this year’s X Games. And if we’re talking streaks in snowboarding, how about the streak currently happening in X Games Superpipe. Shaun White has just wrapped up his 6th straight win in Halfpipe at X. How insane is that? Shaun also with the win, secured his 23rd X Games Medal and his 15th Gold Medal total, a record that should stand for along time. What else can you say about the guy who doesn’t like being called “The Flying Tomato”? Sorry Shaun, I still like that nickname better then your new one, Animal. I think it’s far worse being named after a Muppet character. In the actual competition, Shaun posted a 95 on his first run, even with an under rotation on his last wall. That pretty much deflated the rest of the competitors right off the bat. Scotty Lago posted in the 90′s but after Shaun’s score it was a battle for 2nd place. However, the big surprise of the night was 14 year old Ayumu Hirano! He shocked The X Games Crowd and took silver with a 92.33 in his very 1st X Games event. Mark my words, this kid is gonna beat Shaun White at Superpipe in the next two years. That’s a guarantee! After all, Ayumu Hirano was matching Shaun trick for trick until the end of his run. All he has to do is land every trick Shaun White can stick and he’ll win someday? Yea, like anyone can match Shaun trick for trick in the halfpipe right? All I know is, this little Japanese kid better not ruin the USA’s chances at a 4th straight Olympic Gold Medal in pipe. I’m not calling it a changing of the guard “I am just sayin”. Lets talk Shaun white in Slopstyle. Are you sure you want to go there? It was played up as Mark McMorris vs Shaun White going into it. It was like one of those heavy weight Vegas fights that gets called a draw before it even got going. I knew going into the Slopestyle event that Shaun had a lot to prove. Yes, I know Shaun dominated in Slopestyle for many years but he also stopped competing in Slope in 2009. That’s four years ago man! You know what’s happened in the last four years in Slopestyle at X Games? First off, the double and triple cork have both happened in Slopstyle in the last 4 years! Shaun had only been doing his doubles in the pipe, and simply didn’t have all the variation to match McMorris, not to mention his box and rail tricks were super stock. In the end it was all McMorris taking gold with Shaun not even making to the podium. Bottom line, it’s gonna take a lot of work if Shaun White plans to represent the USA in both Pipe and Slopestyle in Sochi, Russia next year. My Message to Shaun: Shaun, please stop this nonsense, don’t compete in both Superpipe and Slopestyle in Russia. We need you in Pipe only bro! Let Eric, Sage, and Chuck G. handle things for the US in Slopestyle. They got this. I’m more worried about this 14 year old Ayumu kid. He scares me! If he matches you trick for trick you could lose out on our chance at a 4th straight Olympic Gold in Superpipe. Please Shaun, focus on pipe. If not for me, then do it for the red, white and blue! In closing Shaun, I would like to say, beware. The Olympics in South Korea are 4-5 years from now when you’ll be 30 and Ayumu will be 18, just a thought!!! Sorry man but someone had to say it, and just to be clear, I’m not hating I’m just being realistic. Superpipe is your bread and butter, its time to prove it! PS: Stay off the skateboard too!
