The future of social interactions | Is face to face contact going away?

People are increasingly worried about what is happening with social interactions in our mobile age.

You see, face to face interaction has risks. It makes us vulnerable. It makes us feel naked in the presence of others. As human beings we are constantly sending signals, outputs through not just our words, but through our entire beings, our gestures, our movements. We may pretend to smile but our shaking body gives away our anxiety. We may pretend to be lively but our rigid smile gives us away all the same. We may pretend to show concern but our facial expression says otherwise. Face to Face interaction is beautiful, direct, transparent and also risky for those who are trying to improve their position in the world in relation to others. And this my friends is what most people want nowadays. To improve their status, to keep moving up.

Interacting with others through screens feels safe, but it also gives the impression that you can easily manipulate and control the situation. Unfortunately it also has a dark and dramatic side effect. We are biological machines, we get closer to each other as our hormones and bodies communicate visually, acoustically, via touch, etc. Communication through screens weakens our connections, creates distance. Produces societies where we have many gadgets but few close friends.

What is interesting is to realize that the future doesn’t have to be this way. We are in a time of transition. Future interactive interfaces will get rid of physical screens. As brain implants, neurotech and other related technologies become real, face to face contact will be improved and facilitated by technology, not impeded. Think about it. We should move towards a world where technology powers an even better face to face direct connection between humans, instead of a world where technology gets in the way and prevents us from connecting in powerful ways.
