where to start. there are so many songs i associate with brainfreeze. i literally have like three different playlists dedicated to them. I'll give you ten songs that i think capture the major themes i associate with them.
required reading to set the tone.
lacy - Olivia Rodrigo
-> Chase and Oliver are both immensely jealous of the other. They want the other's life so bad and they hate themselves for it. They see the worst parts of themselves solved in the other. They share a desperate and burning desire for the other and they resent the attraction.
Better Than Me - The Brobecks
-> A big aspect of both Chase and Oliver's characters is their deep rooted insecurity. They both feel the need to prove themselves and be the best at everything that they do. They both already felt this way on their respective teams and now that feeling is cranked to 11 that they're together. Their feelings of inadequacy make them self-destructive and desperate to be desired.
Allies or Enemies - The Crane Wives
-> The Elite Force is not a perfectly united team, it's comprised of 3 grieving teenagers fighting to save a race of people and 2 teenagers who don't have any stakes in what does or doesn't happen. They have resources and the skills to help but they can never truly understand the gravity of the situation. Chase in particular is incredibly hostile toward the MM trio. He can't understand their powers so they're freaks. He see's their emotions as getting in the way of the mission and is incredibly frustrated by the fact that Oliver in particular cannot fully control his powers. He goes out of his way to ridicule and undermine him and his friends. They may technically be working together but they are in no way on the same team.
Who Treats You Right - Pansy Division
-> Internal Monologues. They both want each other so bad they actually cannot focus on anything else. And their egos are so big that they think they're the only one's who would be able to give the other what they need. Chase in particular has a string of failed relationships that Oliver would love to put an end to. They both think they could fix each other.
El Diablo - Mon Laferte
-> They love to hate each other. So much of their attraction is based in hatred. Everything about the other drives them up the wall. Their desire is carnal and without reason. They despise the fact that they're obsessed with each other. Oliver especially.
Kiss With A Fist - Florence + The Machine
-> They are out to get each other. Intentionally and unintentionally they are making each other's lives a living hell. They are constantly fighting. They do not get along. And yet, they love the fight. They love the rush it gives them to push the other to their limit. They want the other to get mad and lash out.
Casual - Chappell Roan
-> They are stuck in situationship hell. denial denial denial. They're getting together in secret and making out in mission command. They don't talk about it. They don't mention it, but everyone knows that something is happening between them they just can't tell what it is. I think Oliver wants more than Chase is willing to give. Post-Sebastian Chase isn't particularly willing to get too close to anyone yet. But he has a reciprocated desire for Oliver so he let's himself indulge.
Besando a otra - Los Saicos
-> Reese Arc. Chase starts dating Reese without breaking off what he had with Oliver. Oliver finds out with everyone else. Officially ends the unofficial relationship they had.
Vicious - Sabrina Carpenter
-> Oliver privately carrying the burden of being slighted by Chase who is still refusing to acknowledge him. Chase is wrapped up in his relationship with Reese. He was quick to jump into a relationship with her to avoid confronting what he had with Oliver.
You'd Like That Wouldn't You - Reneé Rapp
-> Oliver wondering/thinking about what Chase thinks of him now that he's with Reese. He hates Chase and wants to think that he would never get back together with him. He thinks Chase sees him as something disposable and replaceable, dreaming of Oliver crawling back to him. The idea of being perceived as so weak is sickening. and yet. he can't stop thinking about him. and about how much he wants Chase to still want him and find him desirable.
How do I think they handle conflict? Uh. Extremely poorly. Like it's the root cause to all their issues poorly.
Chase and Oliver are both incredibly repressed. But they also have incredibly short fuses. I think whenever one of them has a problem they make no attempt to communicate with the other because they see it as a sign of weakness. Instead I think they retaliate and try to make the other miserable.
I think this tends to be mostly self-contained but if Oliver says something about Bree or Chase says something about Kaz or Skylar it's very much fight first, talk later.
They're incredibly similar and that's their downfall. The truth is they're incredibly compatible. If they opened up just a little more I think they could make their relationship work. However, at the end of the day they're two incredibly traumatized teenage boys who carry the weight of the world on their shoulders. In their eyes attempting to communicate with the other would be admitting defeat. It would be the most vulnerable that they could be and neither of them is willing to go there just yet.
This is very much influenced by their parents! Chase is so similar to Donald you would think that was his biological father. Chase is obviously Donald's favorite. He may be ridiculed and undermined, but he is treated with a care that Adam or Bree is not privy to. Chase is the one who spends the most time around Donald!! His perception of intelligence is shaped by the way Donald carries himself and his business. Including the way he handles secrets. Donald may be and incredibly emotional man but he takes secrets to the grave. Or at least he tries to. And unfortunately included in that is his love for his children. He clearly cares about them but is so bad at expressing it. Donald is really only quick to express how much he loves his children when they're in grave danger. And Chase I think would adopt this mindset.
Chase is also very big and dramatic with his emotions, but that's also what often gets him into trouble. Between the Commando App and the betrayals by those close to him, I think he would start to be more selective in how he chooses to display affection. His naivety is what gets him into trouble after all. However, this is a major overcorrection and only leads to him hurting those around him.
Oliver is used to not being enough. He's used to hiding his interests, his work, and his friends from parents who don't approve. And yet he's obedient. He does what his parents want and tries to cater to them whenever he strays from that. He's so used to things not going how he planned that usually his course correction is to just double down on whatever is happening. Including with anger and violence. Oliver in Mighty Med is so quick to jump into a fight. And he's no different here.
He tries. He tries really hard to be polite and cordial but there's only so much that can do before you just start letting people walk all over you. He is his mother's son. And so when Chase pushes, he pushes back harder. And he enjoys it. He loves the fight for control. Sometimes he thinks he's enjoying the fight too much and that scares him. It reminds him of Mr. Terror. It reminds him of the erased timeline and how he's always one decision away from becoming a villain.
brainfreeze dynamic does include chase purposefully antagonizing oliver and pushing him away so he doesn't have to confront the reality of their situation. by the way. just in case you were wondering.
kaziver fan in the way that they're literally soulmates and perfect for each other. brainfreeze fan in the way that i think they hate each other and want to make out about it.
