Better to brand YOU or your product?
You have to understand that YOU are the product. The reason why I say this is because products and things come and go.
One thing that’s consistent and constant is YOU. For example, “besthealthadvise.com” is your branding site. If your name is John Taylor, “John Taylor” would be the brand name to use because he is owner and the founder of the health site.
You need to understand that you have to brand YOU because you’ll never know what can happen to the product.
You never know what can happen to the website or to the glass of water that you are selling. The time you’re spending on branding something else can be spent on branding you and it will have a better impact on what you do in the future.
If you started branding yourself online since 2005 and you’ve done it for 10 years of consistent online branding, you would have millions of followers. Look at the guys who started very early on YouTube. They all have millions of subscribers, make a lot of money and have a very strong brand.
If you’re a student, an artist, a creative, a business owner, an entrepreneur, whatever you’re doing, you need to understand that YOU are the brand. You need to have a massive leverage in negotiations and considerable amount of power in any business decision you are involved in.
I was talking with a client today about the importance of branding you. When you brand YOU, you could sit down and talk with almost anyone on earth. Journalists or presidents of certain countries would sit down with you because you have the influence and you have to use it well.
If you’re unknown, even if you’re the biggest rock star and people love you, if people can’t find you online, you amount to nothing.
The new currency on Internet is the influence you have on social media. Even though you can’t go and deposit likes, followers and fans in the bank, it gives you leverage when you’re dealing and negotiating in business ventures or getting a new job.
If you’re a service provider and you actually have all that content out there for free and you have a lot of stuff online, people could find you easily. If you have good reviews and testimonials, you stand out. You have to recognize that YOU are the product.
As much as people want to brand the product that they’re selling, the reality is: products will come and go. But if you start branding YOU today, you will have a huge advantage.
Put the focus on branding YOU, create content, interact, network and put as much stuff out, because it will build the influence that you have online.
Using all social media platforms?
You need to adopt platforms early. Obviously, we can’t go back in time, but you want to be a first mover.
You want to adopt platforms as early as possible. I haven’t moved fast enough on some platforms, but on others I literally signed up in the first few days.
There are other platforms where I waited and I regretted waiting. If I had understood 10 years ago what I know now, I could have had way more impact and made a lot more exposure.
I could have made a lot more money and have a lot more influence if I had been one of the first few people in Europe to sign up on Facebook or Twitter.
Today, that’s what I’m doing, because I’m a very quick mover. I like to play a lot with all these platforms and you can find me on any social media platform like Pinterest, Vine, Snapchat, Instagram, Tumblr, Medium and Beem. Beem just came out two weeks ago.
I have an account and I was one of the first to sign up on it, because I signed up on day one. You need to be a first mover for several reasons:
If you’re the first one to ride, you can actually get the username you want. If your name is John Smith, chances are, all of the social media handles are taken.
But if your name is John Smith and you were one of the first ones on earth to get on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat, you would have had @johnsmith everywhere. I’m pretty sure you don’t have a chance to have that handle today.
The first people who move can choose their usernames. On Twitter if you are called “John Smith” for example and then on Facebook you’re called “the fitness lover” and then on Instagram you’re called “photography hero” and you have different usernames for every platform, where’s the consistency in branding? You need to have consistency.
Take me for example. On some platforms I’m Matthias Mazur, on some platforms I’m Matt Mazur. On Twitter, I’m @mattmazur. On Instagram, I’m on Matthias Mazur. On Snapchat, I’m on Matthias Mazur.
On Facebook, I’m Matthias Mazur, because I was the first. I actually want to have Matthias Mazur as the brand.
I signed up very early on Twitter. I could have had Matthias Mazur, but I went for Matt Mazur which is a mistake.
I should have gone with Matthias, but I can’t go back because now Matthias Mazur on Twitter is already taken.
Facebook video is exploding now and they’ve actually taken over YouTube. It’s tough to get the exact stats of how many people actually finish videos on Facebook versus YouTube, but Facebook has outgrown YouTube and their mission is to destroy it.
If you do some research, Facebook video is huge now, so use it.
Snapchat is one of the fastest growing social media platforms at the moment. You have to be on it.
The demographic is getting older on Snapchat. Tumblr is not a new platform but people are starting to use it more and more. I saw a stat today and the numbers that I saw is Tumblr has 120,000 new accounts a day which is more than Facebook.
If you want to be ahead of your competition, you want to be first. You want to be the first mover to dominate the space that you’re in.
What is your opinion on this subject? I would love to hear from you in the comments section below. :)
Branding book of the week
If you’re following the news, it’s difficult not to know what’s going on with the elections in the US, especially with this guy called Donald Trump. I saw Donald Trump speak in London.
I think it was 2 or 3 years ago and he had a key note speech for about 45 minutes.
I read a bunch of his books years ago. “The Art of the Deal” was one and another book with Robert Cusack called “How To Get Rich”.
He also has a book called “Think Big”. In my opinion, he is a great entrepreneur and I’m not talking about the politics, because I have no interest in debating politics.
In today’s economy with everything going on, I just look at the entrepreneur. If there’s one person who’s done an amazing job branding himself, it’s Donald Trump.
This guy is the master of branding. You might hate him for all his comments. I don’t agree with them.
I personally think a lot of stuff is completely whacked, but there’s no denying that this guy knows how to get exposure through TV, social media and through his shows called “The Apprentice”.
This is a really good book, because it’s really interesting to see and just get into his brain and understand how he views his brand. He has made all his money by licensing his name.
He really cultivated that brand of money, gold and riches. I thought this was really timely to show you this book, because it’s a really good one about branding “Trump Style”.
I’m sure a lot of people agree and some may don’t agree but that’s not my point. In terms of branding, this guy knows what he’s doing.
