i’ve been waiting for ur opinion/thoughts on vindicate. specifically you
NO ONE UNDERSTANDS HIM LIKE I DO.
This song vindicates the band but it also vindicates me and my brain worms. Andy really got up on his cross nailed himself in and said "What if I'm a dyke have you ever considered that?" to the people who have been calling him a fag his whole life.
So the song is called Vindicate and it's the title track to the album. And Andy did post on his stories yesterday, its gone now but I read it and fuck me I wish I had screencapped it, about how he's had this chip on his shoulder this whole fucking time about how the band got torn down a lot at the beginning of their careers by the scene that was supposed to accept them, and I as a social justice warrior and a faggot have been saying this whole time that one of their biggest barriers at that time was the 00s homophobia that was rampant at the time even in more accepting scenes like the emo one. Hallelujah, Certainty, both of these songs were explicitly taking aim at the band's detractors.
Vindicate is a a song about lesbian nuns getting killed by the Catholic church for being lesbians. I'm... I'm... boiling in my blood with all my pride and sin. BOILING IN MY BLOOD WITH ALL MY PRIDE AND SIN??? BOILING IN MY BLOOD WITH ALL MY PRIDE AND SIN ANDREW WHEN I GET YOU.
Listen, people are going to look at this and look at the fact that the women in question are both skinny and conventionally attractive, but in a slightly off beat way, and they're gonna say that these are straight guys using lesbians to get off, but they don't get this band like I do. They were not there in 2011 when the only thing anyone had to say about them was "faggot". And also, this is coming at a time when the entire world seems to want to roll back queer rights, I don't think putting lesbians in your music video and explicitly showing them being killed for being gay is safe like it was 10 years ago. That on top of them being covered in blood or being beheaded taking up as much time as them actually fucking.
I feel so much better about vindicate than I felt about Certainty. I've been more than willing to criticize this band when they deserve it and I have many times, and to be honest, I don't think they meant it that way because I do not think these guys think about politics like that, Andy at least seems pretty unplugged from the social media news circuit in general, but Certainty had the potential to come off a bit radical centrist, this one really clarifies their intentions with the album, and that intention is to whine about people being mean to them in the most spectacular way possible. I'm obsessed, I'm on the floor, I want him to never ever ever shut up about the homophobes.
The way that it starts with shame and literal self flagilation, the way that the girls embrace each other and the lyrics go "I know I'll never let it die, all the memories burn through, I'll fucking vindicate my life, and bury whats left of you" The way they overcome their own shame and express their own natural urges, fuck mary fuck jesus fuck god, it's us the way we were made to be, put the belt down and spread your legs, sister. And they're immediately punished for it, and that punishment corrupts everything that was beautiful about it, it turns them into fucking vampires and one of them slays the other one a couple lifetimes later, but not before having her one last time. I WANT AN ENTIRE GRAPHIC NOVEL ABOUT THESE LESBIAN VAMPIRE NUNS ON MY DESK BY NOON NEXT TUESDAY!!!!!!
And then it's like, cutting Andy in as a vampire as well his mouth full of blood as the vampire bites into her lover. It's so clearly positioning him, the band, them as the lesbian vampire nuns.
ALSO ALSO ALSO
The violence and the shame is done to them in the catholic church, right, and then they cut, and it's them, now corrupted, now damaged by the hate and shame that the catholic church beat into their souls. And they're out in this goth club, wearing leather and dancing to metal music, both victims, both trying to shed the shame and have sex out in the open, but they can't help dragging that shame and violence that they got from the church with them out into the emo scene, and she brings the cross into this space, this space thats supposed to be where they go to heal from that, where they go to be who they are naturally out in the open, and she uses that cross and that violence to kill her lover. What if I exploded. What if I died right here right now in front of all of you.
It's about the cycle of violence, it's about homophobia, it's about shame, it's about the church, it's brilliant. Its so them. I'm I'm........
He got called a faggot, so he got up on his cross, nailed himself in, and said "what if I'm a dyke, did you ever think about that."
Andy Beirsack getting traumatized in catholic school for the crime of being kinda fruity with it is the best thing that happened to metal music since Tony Iommi lost his fingertips in that factory in 1965.
