I am going to talk about Brandon Barthrop for a moment
Brandon Barthrop is the leader of a hyper-charismatic Christian organization called Red Letter Ministries. I'm using the term "Christian" in the loosest sense here because of their statement of faith. Barthrop is a false prophet (on the grounds that his prophecies failed to come true). His entire website reads like a satire of those who take scripture out of context in order to support their behavior and prejudices rather than actually learning from what the Bible actually says. Except, instead of being humorous, he and his followers are utterly serious about it. It makes me wonder if he truly believes the crap he's spouting or if he's playing a cruel joke on his followers.
One of the major things they focus on is the concept of being "drunk with the Spirit". Or high or pretty much anything relating to drugs and alcohol except without actually taking any drugs. They believe that, if you're filled with the Spirit, you'll truly feel it and feel a high superior to that of any drug.
They reinforce this concept by taking verses out of context from various translations of the Bible. They support this practice by saying to study various translations of the Bible in order to better understand scripture. But when they actually use quotes, they take snippets from whatever translation is worded in the way that supports them. When you read the verses in context, it becomes clear that they're misusing the scripture (but they defend themselves saying that every verse has a whole ton of meanings, and their use one correct meaning).
My favorite verse that Barthrop uses to support the concept of being "drunk with the Spirit" in a literal sense is Jeremiah 23:9.
The portion used says "I am like a drunken man, like a man overcome with wine, because of the LORD and his holy words."
That isn't the whole verse; it's only the second half. The first half says "My heart within me is broken because of the prophets; all my bones shake."
It is taken out of a conversation between Jeremiah and God. Jeremiah is crying to God about the prophets. Telling God that there's something fishy about those prophets. God responds two verses later saying that the prophets in question are false, those "holy words" aren't actually his words, and not to listen to them.
This particular verse resonates with me because Barthrop the false prophet is using a verse about false prophets to support himself.
