Ella noticed the condensed milk behind her and set her phone in the shopping cart before turning back. She ran right into a solid wall of man and stumbled back, pulling her hands up in a defensive stance.
He caught her upper arms before she fell and pulled her upright. She jerked away as her breath came in heavy pants.
“Hey, you all right?” His warm baritone eased the building panic, followed by pale blue eyes holding her gaze, calming the sudden fear.
Once her heartbeat slowed, she quickly took him in. Hair as black as night, icy blue eyes, pale skin, full pink lips. The emblem on his uniform struck a chord and the rest of her tension rolled away.
A nervous laugh escaped. “Sorry. I didn’t see you there.”
He ducked his gaze, a slight smile on his lips. “My fault.”
“Mine. I wasn’t looking.” I’m an idiot.
He chuckled. “I’ll admit, I was staring. You look familiar. Just trying to figure out why.”
No, no, no! He can’t know who I am. Shaking her head, she backed toward her cart and closed her eyes. Her heart tried to pound its way out of her chest.
“Sorry. Too forward?” He shuffled away one step and shoved his hands in his pockets. “I wasn’t trying to come on to you. You really do look familiar, and I can’t figure out why.”
She pushed the black frames up her nose and shrugged. “I’ve been in town all of an hour. Never been here before in my life.”
Recognition lit up his face and her heart sank. Maybe settling down was a really bad idea.
“Mila’s friend? Ella, right?”
Nodding, she took a relieved breath. “Yeah.”
“Must have seen pictures of you over at her house.”
“Oh.” A frown pulled at her lips.
He shook his head. “Damn. Hey, sorry. I’m Trent Ward.” He held out his hand, and she took it cautiously.
“Hi, Trent. Look, I’m doing a little shopping now that I’m finally here. I drove all day long and I’m tired, but I need food. I’m sure I’ll see you around.”
Her nervous rambling made him smile. “You will. I live across the street from you.”
“Huh. Have a nice night.” Dipping her head, she grabbed the condensed milk and dropped it into the cart before hurrying out of the aisle.

Review: Entangled Darkness by Brandy L Rivers
Even the best intentions can be entangled in darkness.
Tremaine is no stranger to tough decisions. One case took him so deep he nearly lost his way. Saving Liz gave him purpose, pulling him back into the light.
After tragedy, Tremaine helped Liz rebuild her life. Their pieces fell into place with Robert. The three of them have forged an unbreakable bond through heartbreak and reunion.
Robert’s new case threatens to drag Tremaine back to his darkest hours. Every revealed secret pulls them deeper, entwining the three further.
Together they’ll uncover plots set in motion long before Tremaine’s was assigned the case that nearly broke him. The truth will either bind or destroy them all.
Brandy L Rivers’ “Entangled Darkness” takes readers on the continuing journey of the fantastic trio that is Liz, Tremaine and Robert.
Fans of Rivers’ Others of Edenton series first delved into the lives of Liz, Tremaine and Robert in Book 3 of the series “Falling Into Place.” And through that story and the other tales told in the series, readers have gotten great glimpses into the lives of both Liz and Robert. But one person’s history remained a mystery. Who was Tremaine before Liz came along? What brought him to Liz’s side that fateful day when she was a child? The mystery of who Tremaine is is one that this reader has wanted an answer to for several books now. And repeated entreaties to Ms Rivers had only been met with vague responses mostly boiling down to “you’ll find out.” Then Entangled Darkness found its way to my kindle.
Finally we get the answers to all of the Tremaine questions. His history is one that is truly entangled in darkness and it is the light brought to his life by both Liz and Robert that showcases who he is and where he’s headed.
An adversary from a truly dark time in Tremaine’s past has resurfaced forcing him to face – and confess to the people he loves – a side of himself that he had hoped to never face again.
Rivers does an incredible job showcasing how easily a person’s past can influence their future. Her characters are so well written that you can see the reactions coming before they happen. Robert’s by the book attitude and Liz’s tendency to flaunt the rules when she sees a better way both affect how they react to learning Tremaine’s past. Rivers doesn’t allow her characters to just blindly accept things. Their individual personalities are so well rounded that they practically leap off of the page.
This exploration of who Tremaine was and how it has shaped the man/mage etcetera that he is now is one of the myriad reasons why I am and will continue to be a fan of Brandy Rivers.

Everything comes crashing down with the introduction of a new threat in Seattle. Jackie and Eddie will learn things they never expected. Will his loss and her new admirer push them together, or drive them apart?
I’ve said it before and will probably say it again, but Brandy L Rivers writes characters that just jump right off the page at you. My initial reaction to Jackie and Eddie in ‘Coming Together’ (Rivers’ 5th installment in the Others of Seattle series) – “They feel almost like family … like they’re friends I would actually have.” These two are such well-rounded characters that they could legitimately be that friend you love to go out with or the sibling you love to tease.
Fans of Rivers’ Others of Edenton and Others of Seattle already know Jackie and Eddie – having been “introduced” to them in previous books. But if you’re new to the series, there’s nothing that would keep you from understanding, enjoying and falling in love with the characters and world that have been created.
Jackie Oceans and Eddie Swiftclaw grew up together – becoming the best of friends as adults. What neither has ever admitted to the other: that both have wanted something more. As is expected in tales such as these, Eddie is preparing to propose to his girlfriend and Jackie is being pursued by a charming vampire. At the same time, powers are surging and old enemies re-surface. The Others of Seattle must come together to fight their newest threat – but will that threat push Eddie and Jackie together or further apart?
I loved seeing both Jackie and Eddie come into their own in this story. Not only are they finding their way in their relationships, but also learning to embrace their powers and find who they are as Others. While she is a strong woman, Jackie’s powers worry her and Eddie has fears of his own about his abilities. Their insecurities really develop them more deeply as characters and make them even more relatable.
I truly believe the thing I love the most about Rivers’ writing is that she never forgets or neglects other characters during a story. While those other characters may not have presence within the current tale being told, there is almost always a mention of or allusion to the continuation of other stories. Within ‘Coming Together’ we get peeks into the lives of Toryn & Isa (Storm Mistress), Robert, Trem & Liz (Falling Into Place), and even a little Trevor & Roxy (Nights Embrace).
While the greater story of Jackie and Eddie finally finding their way is what draws the reader it, it’s the investment in the greater world of the Others – be they in Edenton or Seattle – that keeps the reader [at least this reader] immersed and coming back for more.

Review: Blissful Agony by Brandy L Rivers
Memories can hold you prisoner… Clint Armstrong would love to forget his start as a werewolf. His past is a source of shame and never-ending guilt he can’t escape. That is, until he lays eyes on a healer who wipes it all away. Emily McCallister lived through hell at the hands of her abusive twin. With him dead and gone, she’s finally moving forward, finding the confidence one man inspires. The first man her instinct doesn’t scream to run far away from. When Clint’s previous pack learns he’s alive, they’ll stop at nothing to break his spirit. He saved Emily from a dangerous encounter with his old second. Now the Elm Wood pack won’t rest until they shred the life he’s built. With Emily in danger, he’ll do all he can to keep her safe.
Brandy L Rivers has quickly become one of my go to examples when I talk to readers and writers about creating fictional worlds. Her ability to introduce and start developing a periphery character in one book and make that character into the central character several books later is one that I am in awe of. In Blissful Agony – book 7 of the Others of Edenton – Rivers takes two people that her readers know from previous stories and shows just how important their roles have been as she brings them together in harmony.
Rivers first introduced her readers to Emily McCallister in “Falling Into Place” four Edenton books ago. [Reviewer’s note: I make the distinction of “4 Endenton books ago” since Rivers has also written several “Others of Seattle” books that take place simultaneously and overlap in the same universe] At the time it seemed that Emily’s role was merely to help explain the backstory of protagonists Liz and Robert. Little did readers know that everything we learned about Emily in that story – everything we may have written off as inconsequential – would become central to Emily finding her place in Edenton and helping a character that readers have come to love find love himself.
Werewolf Clint Armstrong has been a part of the Edenton pack and world since the very beginning. Over the course of the series, readers have come to know him as a strong enforcer for the Edenton pack as well as a bit of a sexual deviant. What Rivers has not really revealed before “Blissful Agony” is just why Clint is the way he is. Up until this point, readers were not privy to the things Clint had gone through before becoming a part of the Edenton community. It is this past that rears its ugly head just as Clint and Emily are learning to open up and trust again.
Though from very different backgrounds, Clint and Emily’s pasts and experiences help them to both find their strengths. When Clint’s former pack surfaces and seeks to drive a wedge between him and the Edenton pack, he and Emily must face the pasts that haunt them in order to find their path to the future.
Rivers has once again proven that readers should never discount any character they are introduced to as you never know when they’ll be the exact person that is needed in the future.
Blissful Agony drives home the point that sometimes it’s our perceived weaknesses that become our strengths and that only in facing our darkness can we truly find our light.
