June 9, 1863, The Battle of Brandy Station in Virginia was the largest cavalry battle of the war. Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry held the field after being attacked by Union troops under General Alfred Pleasonton.
Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart and his staff camped about one half mile northeast of Brandy Station. Troops sleeping on the ground were awakened the morning of June 9, 1863, by the sound of small arms fire and cannon fire. Early in the melee the Eighth Illinois Cavalry’s commander, Major Alpheus Clark was shot in the hand, requiring his evacuation. Almost immediately, the next ranking officer, Captain George Forsyth, was shot in the thigh. At about the same time, Captain Benjamin Foote, commanding Company E, Eighth New York was shot and killed. Lacking leaders the Federal attack stalled. [Source: Joseph W.
