Two hours past midnight and Vera’s already sprawled out on the open field, unkempt grass tickling the back of her ankles as she searches for something invisible in the night sky. She’s never had Sabrina’s penchant for theatrics, but for a brief moment, she could have sworn she saw the stars flicker at the mention of Ollie’s name. "You really can’t let go of that, can you?” She smiles despite the sudden desert on her tongue. Despite her mind launching into a hundred different directions, only to be forcefully pulled back to all the days back in high school when she marvelled at how perfectly his hands fit hers. “Ollie is... still Ollie. I don’t--- know what you want me to say. It’s common knowledge he’s got no mean bone in his body. If he could, he’d like... nurse Mother Earth back to perfect shape or something.”

She catches a glimpse of him trying to assemble all the Big Fish into a safe and decent space in The Ship and balks. Lowers her gaze as every ounce of laughter on her lips withers.

When she starts again, her voice barely rises above a whisper. “I think we could have been something real, once. But it’s---” Vera clears her throat. “It doesn’t really matter now, does it? Looking back, I wish we’d broken up sooner. Then he wouldn’t have had to stretch himself thin for so long just to deal with my baggage.”
