 a  sigh  on  her  lips  as  she  heard  what  the  soldier  was  saying  ,  she  looked  down  ,  her  eyes  trailing  around  the  room  as  she  thought  what  he  was  saying  .         ❛       I  know  that  you  always  try  to  save  everyone  ,  Steve  .  but  sometimes  we  just  can’t  save  them  all  .  .   and  when  that  happens  you  can’t  take  all  the  burden  on  your  shoulders  .  .     ❜

   “So, what’d they do to you?”

   There was a tone of bitterness in Bucky’s voice, one he couldn’t hold back. The men had finally stopped for the night, separating out into smaller groups, huddled around fires and sharing whatever food they had managed to grab on their way out of the factory. Dugan, Gabe, and a few of the others Bucky had shared a cell with were somewhere nearby, but had recognised the need for him to have a moment alone with Steve. 

   His expression was hard, anger hidden just beneath the surface. For so long, he’d gotten through this war by the thought that his loved ones were safe back home. He’d seen the devastation caused in Europe, the rubble that had once been villages and homes, and he was just thankful his parents and sisters and friends were not in danger of having a shell dropped on them. To find out Steve had not only found a way to get himself in this situation, but had offered himself up like some sort of a guinea pig? That just made him want to rage at the world, burn it down. 

   The world that had always said Steve needed to change, that he wasn’t good enough, when in Bucky’s eyes he wouldn’t change him for the world. He’d prayed his friend could be healthier sometimes, but he’d never want to change him the way these people had. And to see it be done, it hurt. To know the kid he’d grown up with wasn’t coming back.

            SHE CAN’T BREATHE. His touch has become an aspect of comfort to her, something that makes her feel like she’s home; she leans into his hand, turns to gently press her lips against his palm. But it’s the words that fall from his mouth after he pulls back from kissing her that causes her breath to hitch in her throat. Lips part in surprise, eyes widening slightly as brows raise just enough. 

            ❛ —- what ? ❜ It escapes in a whisper; she can’t seem to look away from him.

“Oh, come on Rogers!” Alys almost stomped her foot in frustration, ALMOST, but held back the reaction in order to not appear childish. “I wasn’t even doing anything. Just let me go already!” She was in no position to make any DEMANDS as she was the one who had been unwisely caught outside her dorm in the middle of the night — by the most stickler prefect nonetheless. The wise thing to do would be to keep her mouth shut and accept whatever punishment she was given... but ‘wise’ wasn’t something Alys was called very often. “What happened to Gryffindors looking after each other, and all that? Are you really going to give me DETENTION?”

SHE  HAD  DISCREETLY  SNUCK  UP  ON  HIM  in  the  hallway  after  making  sure  no  one  else  were  around  .  Battling  houses  and  all  that  .  .  .      ❛     So  ,  uh----  who  are  you  bringing  to  Slughorn’s  party  on  Saturday  ??     ❜     They’d  agreed  to  only  see  each  other  in  private  ,  it  was  the  best  for  both  for  their  sakes  .  And  yet  it  bugged  her  every  time  they  had  to  find  each  their  own  date’s  ,  because  all  they  had  had  to  remain  a  secret  .
