now would be such a good time to post a waifling chapter 4 snippet however i have decided against that. it's in progress, life's just been getting in the way !

anyway i've been really on my ghost bullshit again recently, so have a snippet from one of several ghost-related mattdrai wips i have. oopsie.

"Matthew, don't." But Matthew, of course, doesn't listen to his brother. Not when he's egging something on. And especially not when he's trying to impress the hot German dude in front of him. He looks Leon right in the eye as he continues. "If you can hear me," Matthew says into the ether, "Touch me." Everyone waits. Matthew, waiting to feel something. Everyone else, waiting for him to react. Leon barely moves the entire time. Just the smallest tilt of his head, the rest of him stock still. Eyes trained in Matthew's vicinity. After a long, long moment, Matthew tries again, "If there's somebody else here with us, touch me." He turns as his says it, and in his periphery he senses Leon moving this time. Matthew doesn't catch how though, as suddenly he senses something. Matthew screams in instinct, which makes Brady jump to his side immediately, "What? Matty, what? Are you OK?" "I think something just tickled me!" Brady's eyes widen at that, "Where!?" "Erm," Matthew jolts, "Fine. Fine. On the ass. Moving towards- never mind. Just. On my ass." Leon raises an eyebrow at them. That Matthew can see in its entirety. "Doesn't sound like it's malicious then, at least." And, well. Matthew can agree with that. Right now, at least.

"Hi, erm," Leon clears his throat as he stares at his ceiling behind closed eyes. Part of him hadn't even been expecting Matthew to pick up the phone, but he did - and now at least this can be a one-off conversation and not a message he has to wait for a response to, "Why am I staring at an invite to Leanne and Claudia's wedding?" "Shit." "Matthew." "… They don't know." "Matthew." "I never got round to telling people!" Matthew at least has the decency to sound upset, so Leon knows this wasn't something he was expecting to deal with either, "There was so much going on with… everything. And then I guess nobody expected to see you over the summer because of how short it was for both of us and then. Well, camps started. So." Leon sighs. It makes sense that not everyone has heard about their break up through the grapevine when Matthew puts it like that, but it still does feel a little odd to be staring at an invitation to any sort of Tkachuk-hosted event. Surely somebody would have put a stop to that… "Your parents just didn't mention it to anyone either?" Leon says, after a beat. The other end of the line is eerily silent in response. Every hair on Leon's body starts to rise. "Matty. Matthew," he starts, forgetting himself in his shock for a second, "Please don't tell me you didn't tell your parents." "Leon," Matthew whispers from thousands of miles that feel like a thousand more with every passing second away, "I didn't tell anyone." "Fucking hell."

"I can be there, if you want?" Leon says down the phone with full sincerity. It wouldn't be ideal, in the grand scheme of practices and sleep schedules, but he could make it work. Gladly, if Matthew wanted him to.

Nothing to reason with. Nothing to latch on to and hitch a ride out of her own head on.
