I’m sorry to tell you this, America, but the time has come for us to call it quits. I don’t love you anymore. You’re just not the country I fell in love with. I’m starting to believe you never really were that country at all. Maybe I only turned a blind eye to the warning signs, the slavery and nuclear bombing of Japan, the racism and sexism and homophobia, and tried to convince myself that you were the country I wanted you to be, instead of the country that you were in reality.
Now don’t think this is easy for me. It isn’t. I can still picture all the great times we shared, like they were yesterday. Remember the Grand Canyon and the beaches in Southern California? How about that summer in Yosemite? The three month long road trip to visit all 48 of the contiguous states? Those were so much fun, weren’t they? It brings a little tear to my eye when I think about it. It hurts to realize now, after all these years together and all our experiences, that I was merely dazzled by your physical beauty and failed to see how empty you were, how broken, at your core.
I see now that you and I have had a dysfunctional relationship all along. An abusive relationship. I gave you every iota of my support and devotion, waving your flag and shouting your name and proclaiming, to anyone who would listen, that you were the greatest country a citizen could ever hope for. And what did you give me in return? Massive income inequality and crippling college debt and healthcare completely out of reach unless I were to suddenly become a billionaire and political parties so divided, so divisive, that the very thought of them coming together, to solve even the tiniest problem, is almost beyond the realm of comprehension. And don’t forget the shootings. More and more and more. Shooting after shooting after shooting. Happening faster and faster and more often and more often. Happening at such a rate that my brain is losing the power to process them and get over them. Shootings in malls and schools and places of work and public service centers and women’s health care facilities. Even churches. Shootings in fucking churches. Is nothing sacred anymore, America? 355 mass shootings this year, more than there are days. Wait, there’s another one. 356 shootings this year.
I thought you were more mature than this, America. I guess I was kidding myself. Maybe I made the mistake of falling in love with your potential, instead of the country that you really are, in the here and now. Maybe I set my expectations for you too high, but every so often you’d have these shining moments, like the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution; like defeating the Nazis in World War II; like allowing women the right to vote or legalizing same-sex marriage. In the end, however, every time you would show me your good side and I’d let down my guard, you would slap me across the face with hatred, inequality, police brutality, crushing unemployment and unending media brainwashing and propaganda. I hate to admit it, but I can see now that I loved you more than you ever loved me.
So, although it breaks my heart to say it, America, it’s over between us. Finished. Done. Kaput. Why don’t you give me a call when you finally decide to grow up?
