Collaborating with the athletic department and sports medicine staff. Coaches, trainers, and team physicians are critical allies because they are often the first to notice when an athlete is struggling whether it’s a sudden change in behavior, emotional withdrawal, loss of performance, or signs of burnout. They are helping us by integrating mental health check-ins into regular physical evaluations, encouraging mental wellness conversations during team meetings, and backing mental health awareness campaigns at athletic events and practices.
Their involvement legitimizes the mental health conversation within athletic spaces and shows that mental health is just as important as physical health something athletes have traditionally been taught to overlook. By having trusted figures like coaches and trainers openly prioritize mental health, we are sending a powerful message to athletes: It’s okay to speak up. It’s okay to get help.
This collaboration will help students who are struggling by making mental health support feel accessible and routine, not something athletes have to seek out in isolation or secrecy. If mental health screenings and conversations become a natural part of the athletic environment, athletes who are battling anxiety, depression, eating disorders, injuries, or identity crises will be identified earlier and supported faster.
Instead of waiting for a crisis, we can catch signs of struggle early and direct athletes toward the right resources whether that’s a private counseling session, a peer support group, or strategies to manage stress and expectations. Over time, this culture shift will reduce stigma, build a stronger support system within teams, and empower student-athletes to prioritize their well-being alongside their performance.
