Breastfeeding is not easy and it does not come naturally. Breastfeeding is a learned art and a skill many new moms and babies don’t naturally have. The idea that breastfeeding is a natural way of feeding a newborn gets in the way of recognising that many new moms need support and guidance to enjoy their breastfeeding journey- without judgement.🙏 It’s takes patience, perseverance and knowledge to be successful with breastfeeding. Knowing how to latch, position and the mechanics of how breastfeeding work. It’s also important to recognise that a baby is sucking or rooting, that these are reflexes which are involuntary. This is why it can become very confusing for the breastfeeding mom. Lactation is affected greatly by emotions. If your anxious, stressed and sleep deprived your lactation might not be as productive. The message, too feed more to make more isn’t necessarily true either. This can be very exhausting for both mom and baby and will have the opposite effect. Pain is not normal. A mom may have discomfort at the beginning but ongoing pain should be monitored and checked. Breastfeeding should not be pushed. Pushing a mom to breast because it’s natural and healthy is not ok. It’s also not ok that the message surrounding formula feeding is detrimental to a baby’s health and well-being. It’s time for education and guidance to increase the statistics. Moms to hade access to breastfeeding classes and breastfeeding experts who are genuinely interested in a moms needs and not use policies and guidelines to push their agenda. Breastmilk is no doubt the most amazing nutrient for all babies. But that doesn’t mean everyone can or wants too.
