I think the term Trigger Warning (molestation in this case) is merited here. Just a big stack of awful facts are to follow.
Whatever else Marion Zimmer Bradley was to the rest of the world, apparently she was determined to be an absolute horrible human being in her private life. First, when Walter Breen (the man who would become her husband) was controversially banned from a con because of his history of “seducing” young boys she was one of the many who leapt to his defense. Later she would stand by her position of denying the accusations or that it was no one else’s business, claiming that even though she knew of his behavior the victims (in at least one case) “did not impress [her] as a minor child.” The victim in that case was 10 and 11 at the times in question.
Second, according to the testimony and timeline of events archived on Stephen Goldin’s website, by her own admission she lived for years with a known pedophile while also allowing him to share beds with young boys. It was her claim that, because he was impotent (supposedly from the time her daughter was two), “nothing that could bother anyone could happen.” She even tried to adopt the boy that quote is in regards to, not telling anyone about her husband’s pedophilia or spending time in bed with the boy.
Third, and most important is the fact that her own daughter, who through the years was instrumental in bringing Walter Breen to justice and was also raped by him, has recently publicly stated that Marion Zimmer Bradley herself sexually abused Moira and her siblings. Even in the rather stone-wall deposition from Marion’s secretary/lover, where she claims to have been blind to just about everything, the current head of MZB’s estate admits that she was aware of claims that Marion had inappropriately touched her daughter (to which Marion replied, “Children that age didn’t have erogenous zones”) and the feeling she got from Marion’s son that he may have been molested by her. In the words of Marion's daughter, “Walter was a serial rapist with many, many, many victims (I named 22 to the cops) but Marion was far, far worse. She was cruel and violent, as well as completely out of her mind sexually. I am not her only victim, nor were her only victims girls.”
As someone who’d read her works and never heard any of this until the most recent revelations from her daughter… I felt it was important, if not pleasant, to share.
