Brent Webb
Aeroxchange 2013
What an excellent Aeroxchange conference. Parts pooling seemed to be the theme of the conference, while people at the pool seemed to be a favorite activity. Beautiful weather allowed for the first scuba diving event sponsored by AI Intellectual Property and Aircraft Inventory.
Speaking on the opening day, Brent Webb discussed what can be done on the new mobile device platforms, and what is being done.
Super League Previews - Catalan Dragons
Catalan Dragons fans must be delighted with how the club has progressed. A fourth place finish last year was not only deserved, it also breathed new life into the Super League competition. Fully professional and playing out of a beautiful part of the world, Catalan have plenty going for them and with the inclusion of more French talent in their ranks, this could work twofold with new heroes for the passionate Perpignan crowd to cheer and more players likely to transition to the France national team. Looking at their 2013 squad there is still a huge reliance on overseas talent with nine of the named 25 man squad from elsewhere. Let us first however concentrate on the changes. Key to Catalans success will be new coach Laurent Frayssinous. Frayssinous played for Catalan in their first Super League year and was a talented player for around a decade before for Limoux, Villeneuve and Union Treizest Catalan, the precursor to the Dragons and a side made from the amalgamation of St Esteve and XIII Catalan. His new signings include Brent Webb (Leeds), Zeb Taia (Newcastle Knights) and Olivier Elima (Bradford) and the three of them are expected to heavily contribute over the course of the season. Webb, fresh from a five year spell at Leeds has known nothing but success and is a different type of fullback to the departed Clint Greenshields who finished last season with 19 tries. Webb himself suffered an injury hit campaign with Leeds that restricted him to a modest 19 game return and only 4 tries but he did play 155 games in total for the Rhinos, claiming 87 tries in the process and the regular firm fields of the south of France may suit his game and help prolong his career. A classy international player on his day, Webb is sure to be fondly remembered by Leeds fans for his contribution to four winning Grand Final sides. Second Row Elima also had his injury troubles and they restricted him to just 17 games last term for Bradford and only 43 games in his two year stint with the Bulls. Prior to moving to Odsal, Elima was the French international captain and played a magnificent three seasons in Perpignan with 2009 being the best year of his career. Olivier played 30 games for the Dragons that year but more remarkably crossed for 19 tries to finish top of club try scoring charts. A return to that sort of form would be welcome indeed for the mobile forward. Taia is both a Cook Island and New Zealand representative and a versatile performer, able to play at centre, second row, loose forward or prop. Having been handed the number four jersey for the coming season, perhaps that indicates him stepping into the considerable boots of Setamata Sa, but at six foot, one inch and weighing almost sixteen and a half stone, Zeb will also bring plenty of punch. He originally made first grade at Parramatta Ells before joining Newcastle in the 2007 season. Since then he has gone on to appear 101 times for the Knights and showed great courage and fortitude to recover and prosper from a potentially career ending injury. For Championship fans looking at Catalan, there is a growing former Toulouse contingent with Vincent Duport, Kevin Larroyer and Antoni Maria all included in the squad alongside exciting youngsters such as prop Julian Bosquet, wings Damien Cardace and Mathias Pala and hooker Eloi Pelissier With established players such as Leon Pryce, Scott Dureau and Steve Menzies still with the club, Menzies in particular still an excellent player despite approaching forty years of age; combined with the talents of top point scorer Thomas Bosc and the sheer grit, determination and toughness of top appearance maker Greg Mounis, Remi Casty, Jamel Fakir and Jason Baitiere a higher play-off position should almost be expected by the fervent Catalan crowd. Last year Catalan froze in their first play-off game and were brushed aside comfortably by Wigan (46-6) before losing an elimination game to eventual champions Leeds while Challenge Cup interest was ended by eventual winners Warrington at the Quarter Final stage. 2012 did have a couple of further plus points however as crowds continued to grow and Dureau set a new mark for points in a season. Will 2013 match up? It will certainly be interesting to see how the Perpignan side progress with their first French coach at the helm.
