Missing blog
I'm sure that several will have noticed a distinct lack of blog action over the last few days. I just needed to give myself a little bit of time away but I'm back and after being a bit remiss over a couple of usual features, I will soon have those up on site.
Thanks

Hopkins looks for better at Dewsbury - Bolton News Preview
Leigh's Sam Hopkins has been in good form for the Centurions this season and was amongst the try scorers against Sheffield last week. Despite that, the 23 year old was not happy with either his personal performance, or that of his team-mates who lost 40-18. "My first half felt a bit loose and I was probably a bit lower on energy. I don't know what was up with me." He said. The Centurions trailed 24-0 at the break and Sam conceded, "We didn't help ourselves. We should have got three in the tackle a lot more. We should have slowed the ruck down but they got a roll on and we couldn't stop them. They just came at us too big and too fast." "For the second half Paul Rowley said to us that we had to tighten our defence, work as a unit and hopefully things would come. Although I was happy with my try, unluckily enough, we had an unforced error and we lost momentum. We showed what we could do when we completed seven sets in a row and scored two tries but they then got away from us." "Thankfully there is another week and this time we've got Dewsbury." Last season the Centurions success at the Tetley's Stadium was rated amongst their best and Hopkins has called on that same spirit tomorrow (Sunday). "Dewsbury are ahead of us in the Championship at the minute and have had a few good wins. They are a very strong side and we had a close encounter with them last year. It's a tough place to go, up there and play on that small pitch and they have a big set of lads and are going well at the minute." "After our Featherstone defeat we binded as a unit. Hopefully we can do the same and go up there and get a win."
Journal article 14th March 2013
Leigh Centurions four match winning sequence may have come to a shuddering halt at the hands of Sheffield Eagles last weekend but the team have dusted themselves down in preparation for a visit to Dewsbury.
"Sheffield's first half performance was probably as good as they will do all year. They had 26 sets to our 16, and one out of 16 was on their line. Those stats are pretty one sided. We usually speak about building pressure and getting to have a bit of fun at the end of the game and basically we were given some of our own medicine at the weekend. I don't think there was any shortage of bravery or toughness in our side but certainly some poor individual errors cost us collectively." Centurions boss Paul Rowley summarised. Asked if he was looking for a reaction from his players following the 40-18 defeat to the Eagles, Rowley said, "I don't think it's a reaction we're looking for, I think we just need to get on with what we do well, we don't want anyone to drop their heads, be sad or dwell. Obviously we need to work on the things that we did worse and we need to eradicate some of those unforced errors. There will be some cringe-worthy video this week when some of the lads look at the errors they have made. If we take those out of the game, we should be good from week to week, but it's a lean competition now where everyone is pretty equal. There are no givens, it's unpredictable and every game is tough." "Dewsbury this week is another tough ask," Rowley conceded, "they've started well, they are above us in the league and had a very narrow, last minute defeat to Featherstone which perhaps shows how they are going this year." The Rams lost at Barrow last week after shipping in 30 unanswered second half points but Rowley isn't reading too much into it. "There are some fantastic players in the Championship now and it's a good competition. Dewsbury have a new coach that has breathed a lot of enthusiasm into the club and he's brought with him some young hungry players." Last season, Leigh won one of their hardest games of their season at the Tetley's Stadium. "Every ground and every team offers you a host of excuses as to why you shouldn't go there and do well. We don't want to focus on that. We want to speak about them and understand them and be prepared for what's in store but ultimately it's about ourselves and what we offer. "If we are on form and we execute right, and we are confident in our execution - that's important as well. There are plenty of things that I've seen on video where the previous week we executed plays better, we put the pass on because we are confident but this week we didn't. I have to get to the root of why, and that is part of us becoming consistent. We'll work on that and we'll all work hard together." Rowley also praised the impact of his bench players last week. "Spencer was pretty outstanding, Ryan Duffy took his two tries well and his go forward was very good, Penkywicz brightened us up and added an extra spark and Craig Briscoe went well." Sadly for the twenty year old, he suffered a broken hand in the game and could be missing for a few weeks, however Adam Higson is making good progress and is expected to be available for selection soon while Thomas Coyle is only a couple of weeks away from fitness. Briscoe's absence could open an opportunity for the likes of Andy Thornley or one of the club's talented young players who enjoyed an eleven try success at the weekend down at Tredegar Rugby Union Club in South Wales. Leigh scored eleven tries in a 64-4 success with hooker Aaron Lloyd claiming a hat-trick. Other tries came from Josh Ward (2), Sam Peet (2), Anthony Bate, John O'Donnell, Mitchell Cox and James Hill and Ward booted ten goals.
Well played Sheffield - RL Comment
I must commend Sheffield Eagles on their recent form which has seen them claim victory over Featherstone Rovers tonight in the Kingstone Press Championship.
I thought it was a thoroughly absorbing contest throughout and although Rovers were magnificent in halting Sheffield during the spell of all those drop outs, some smarter work ball in hand just saw the Eagles come out on top.
It was certainly a night for the big men to shine and while Anthony England was excellent for Rovers, big Mitch Stringer was my man of the match with a few telling offloads and some big runs against the visitors defence. Those big men rarely get the credit they deserve from RL press and fans alike but teams would be nowhere without the middle men setting the lead.
If there was to be a moan, unlike Daryl Powell who paid a back handed compliment of Sheffield being the most disciplined team ever in rugby league (or words similar), it was the amount of sand on the Don Valley pitch. I'm not sure there is that much on Ainsdale!
It was almost as if the demolition of Don Valley had begun early!
In some ways I will be sad to see the place go!
Once again, a top performance from Sheffield and they deservedly share the top of the Championship table with Featherstone (all this written however before Halifax host Hunslet on Sunday).
Leigh Under 20s continue unbeaten start to league season
LEIGH CENTURIONS 56 FEATHERSTONE ROVERS 12 A magnificent performance from the Centurions youngsters saw them completely outplay their opponents who went the whole of 2012 unbeaten and won their first two games of this season. Leigh built a 24-12 half-time advantage following a competitive opening period but bossed the second forty minutes as they posted ten tries in total. Scrum-half Josh Ward again led the scoring with a try and eight goals but this was a team performance of quality. Leigh made an excellent start after two minutes when skipper Anthony Bate stole the ball from a Featherstone attacker one and one and the Centurions then fired the ball left for John O'Donnell to score. Ward goaled from an acute angle and although Bate was penalised for an incorrect play-the-ball, Leigh were on the front foot again moments later when the captain broke and only good defence denied Mitchell Cox. Then when the Centurions spread play left through Ward and Matthew Pendlebury, O'Donnell was tackled into touch two metres out. The Centurions later coughed up possession when the otherwise solid Andrew Cunningham spilled a high kick and from the resulting possession James Kitchen forced his way over the line for Dave Scott to goal and level the game. Leigh's response came quickly when Ward spotted a gap in the defence, raced through and found the supporting Bate on his shoulder for a try under the posts, but back came Featherstone and when Aaron Lloyd charged down an attempted clearance kick from Liam Mackay and quick thinking saw the Rovers halfback recover and fire the ball out to Lamont Bryan, who in turn found Kieran Johnson for the finish. Scott once again levelled and was then held on the line by solid defence that forced the visitors to turn over. Leigh's third try came courtesy of Bate who spun in a tackle and offloaded for the supporting Brad Ashurst to go under the posts. Ward goaled and added a fourth kick before the break when expansive play involving Anthony Nicholson, Ward, Pendlebury, Cunningham and O'Donnell resulted in Australian trialist Cameron Pitman going over in the corner. Rovers needed an early score in the second half but crucially the Centurions claimed it through Sam Peet after Nicholson, Pendlebury and Ward did the running. Next Cox was the beneficiary as Ward cleared his lines with a kick, Nicholson contested with Scott, the ball rebounded, Ward then nudged the ball on and the centre took the bounce to finish out wide from thirty metres. Nicholson started and finished the move for the next try, putting Matty Crow in space before taking his reverse pass to scoot over. Ward then brought up forty points with his sixth goal, but Leigh were far from finished. Featherstone managed to slow the rate of scoring before the rampant Centurions claimed three tries in the last eleven minutes. First Ward and Lloyd opened the defence for Cunningham to break down the middle and the hooker appeared on his shoulder to take the return pass. Next Cunningham grabbed a deserved try of his own and when Crow was denied in the final minute, Ward was the most alert as he rolled over from dummy half and struck his final goal to confirm an impressive 56-12 win.
