I didn’t plan on blogging the preseason, but there was a ‘funny’ internet story about John Elway this week so here I am. First a little background, in Colorado the news shuts down around 6 pm, for later newscasts they air mostly prerecorded content. So on Thursday evening news broke from a Bronco reporter that John Elway was flying to New York to discuss a medical diagnosis. He and his wife had been seen earlier at practice with their dog. Internet speculation ran wild because this news was completely out of the blue. Why would he fly to New York? Was this new diagnosis terminal? Later that night we learned that the medical diagnosis he would be talking about was an old one. Apparently he has trouble holding a football. He flew to New York to discuss a procedure that helped him out. After that interview on national morning TV, he had other speaking engagements in New York. So that’s the story, a story about the power of internet hype and speculation that ended with a shrug.
While I’m here, the new Broncos look like the old Broncos… at least in preseason. The Bronco offense is already in trouble. Under the new head coach Vic Fangio, the starting offense has to scored one touchdown. The team has been outscored by 13 points over three preseason games.
The new starting quarterback for the 2019 Denver Broncos is Joe Flacco. He has only played in two preseason games but his quarterback rating dropped by 6 points after his first game. That’s not as bad of a drop as Kevin Hogan, his rating dropped off by 58 points from game one to game three. The projected backup Drew Lock is suffering from a wrist injury and nobody knows when he will return. Lock has an earned an average quarterback rating of 70. The other new quarterback, Brett Rypien, has only played in one game, but he earned a rating of 94.
Head coach Fangio has stated he will rest the “starters” for the remainder of the preseason. A great decision in my opinion since doctors are now recommending the Broncos starting offense as a cure for insomnia.
Game four of the preseason is tonight at 7 pm against the La Rams.
