The Florida Project (2017): A Look into Charlie Kelly’s Childhood (IASIP)

I know I tend to compare everything to “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”, so I admit I am biased on this opinion…but…

I can’t help but feel that this movie harshly resembles the childhood of Charlie Kelly.

The movie, The Florida Project (2017), follows a six year old girl named “Moonee” and her two friends during their summer holiday. The kids all live in a motel, each with single parents who are unable to afford permanent housing. Throughout the summer, the kids are mostly unsupervised and spend their time creating mischief and sometimes crimes (arson).

Moonee’s mother, Hailey, is unemployed and has been unable to find a job, causing her to fall behind on rent. Hailey (Bria Vinaite) is in her early 20’s in the movie, making it clear she likely had her kid when she was only a teenager. In order to pay her rent and support her child she ends up turning to prostitution, something she was against doing at the beginning of the movie, as it is her only remaining option.

I feel that this greatly corresponds with the childhood Charlie Kelly was portrayed to experience. Based on the ages of the actors portraying Bonnie Kelly (Lynn Marie Stewart) and Charlie Kelly (Charlie Day), it is likely that Bonnie had Charlie when she was only 19-20 years old, and she likely struggled with mental health already, as portrayed in the show. This would likely make it difficult to find and hold a job that could support both her and Charlie.

The Florida Project gives a glimpse as to why Bonnie Kelly, a seemingly sweet and innocent woman, would turn to prostitution. I don’t believe she ever chose it because she enjoyed it, I believe she was once a young mother who had to make difficult decisions.

I would highly recommend this movie, however I also caution, as it contains a lot of heavy dark subject matter.
