On April 15th, Teamsters at the University of Minnesota marched on the Minneapolis campus to support worker fairness, respect, an honorable contract, and a living wage for all! University employee and Teamster, Naseer Nur, spoke to over 1,000 workers on campus as he described the struggle University workers face every day both economically and administratively. Teamster Mick Kelly said that what the labor movement needs today more than anything is solidarity. And in that spirit Teamsters marched with other labor unions and community groups to the nearest McDonald’s restaurant and stood side-by-side with striking fast food and retail workers.
Before Teamsters marched on the campus, Local 320 Secretary-Treasurer Brian Aldes addressed the group. Here’s an excerpt from Brian’s comments:
Teamster Brothers and Sisters,
This is an impressive Teamster turnout. Today, we are part of a growing movement across the United States.
Tens of thousands of workers are taking to the streets to fight for a living wage and union rights. Employees from Target, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, McDonald's and faculty, staff and students from Universities across the country are taking to the streets.
We are fighting for not just a living wage at the University of Minnesota, but we are fighting for labor rights, collective bargaining rights, and a fair work environment for everyone!
This is the beginning of our battle for a fair contract at the University. For too many years, University management has expected its unionized workers to settle for substandard wages. The time has come for that to change!
Today we will join our Union Brothers and Sisters from SEIU, AFSCME and other Unions, along with faculty and student groups here at the University of Minnesota. We are going to let the University and its administration know that we are fed up!
Are we going to make our message loud and clear?
Let's say it like we mean it!
