Day 9 – A Brief History of Walt Disney by Brian J Robb

There’s a lot to say about Disney as a company. It’s meteoric rise has seen it become almost the only name in animation, and their lobbying has dictated copyright policy for decades. Beyond that, however, A Brief History of Walt Disney is more the story of the man who made the company in the first place. From his birth in 1901 Chicago to Frozen’s best animated feature Oscar in 2014 (when this book was published), Brian J Robb charts Walt’s rise as an industry titan, his wartime successes, and Disney as a company following his death. The first section deals with Walt’s early life, his founding the studio (and the many debts from family and friends he defaulted on), and the problems of selling animation in the early days of cinema. Part two explores the larger company as it grew post-WWII, the foundation of Disneyland, up to Walt’s death. Part three is Disney’s journey into the wilderness, with new leadership and new ideas.

As far as exploration goes, it’s incisive – it doesn’t step back from some of the nasty and underhanded stuff Walt did – but it perhaps pulls it punches at times, glossing over lawsuits and making light of some issues. But it’s telling that the dark parts of the journey are in there at all. Brian J Robb presents a mostly-unflinching view of the creator of some of our favourite animated films, the studio he founded, and its many failures and successes.
