Okay so Taps (1981)

I was gonna write a big essay but now am not founding the spoons. So here is my ramblings under the cut because it has ending spoilers.

My point was going to be about how Brian is torn between the softer civilian life (empathy) and strict military life (rules).

These two sides are mostly shown by his two best friends: Alex (empathy) and David (rules/glory).

The trouble is while having a strict moral code can be seen as a positive what these boys have been taught has been terribly damaging. They have been told all about the glory of war and what it means to die on the battlefield and it messes up all these boys.

Like even Alex isn't really safe from the code, laying into Brian with homophobia because he had an emotional attachment to a male authority figure. There is still the caring side to him there, but like living the system still affects him.

David like... he is so wrapped up in playing soldier he really doesn't see the danger he is in. He is so wrapped up in what he was taught. Even when he helps J.C. and Alex out of the mob he uses his gun, like even the empathy parts of him are corrupted.

And the trouble is that Brian passes the point of no return like way before Alex gets him to surrender.

And David, who has been so far ruined by the system, starts shit up. Mostly because no one like cared directly. Alex and Brian don't think about directly talking to him, they are too blinded about how they are feeling empathy that they think everyone else were agree.

When they both get to David shooting the gun, Alex actually gets there first, but Brian pushes him out the way. To try to save David himself, that's the glory part of war, along with the caring. Brian thinks David can still be saved, he doesn't see him as a lost cause, but as a friend. But it's too late, he has already passed the point of no return.

That's why Brian trying to save David ends up with both of them dead, these two systems can't exist together; Brian is punished for thinking they could. He is killed along with David.

The only difference is if you try empathy and caring for your fellow man, you will at least be honored.

David's body is just left there. Brian gets carried out in Alex's arms.

Which is so heartbreaking because the first time we saw David in the film wasn't him doing the hallway thing with his classmates. It's him expressing the want to play dungeons and dragons with his friend. It's just him wanting to play a game.

They all could've been saved. But in the end; they are all dead. Alex might be still standing but I am not sure he can ever truly get better. He is also too damaged by the system.

Anyway those are my thoughts, feel free to add to them.
