Do you ever think about how we’re not just now hitting the point where Quentin is like, so done with all of this? Do you ever think about how that happened before he even woke up from the personality-changing spell?
Kady lived this whole second life as Sam that’s changed everything about how she relates to the world. It made her stronger, it made her more confident, it made her more sure that she wanted to help people. She gets frustrated by the fact that no one else seems to care at all about how their alternate lives impacted them but we’re still seeing the after shocks of Brian in Quentin episode after episode after episode.
It’s implied that months pass while Brian has been kidnapped and subjected to physical and emotional torture, forced to watch people be murdered in gruesome ways so many times that he barely reacts, anymore, and beaten down to the point where he does what the Monster says nearly without question because he knows the consequences of failing at its game. A bone twisted in the wrong direction, another death he couldn’t stop, a new spray of blood on his face.
That’s the life Quentin has to remember. Not grading papers while curled up next to his girlfriend, not teaching passionately about a book he loves. Death, abuse, torture, for months and months on end.
I don’t honestly think that Quentin ever pulled himself out of that. Even in the moments of manic, self-destructive hope, he still falls back into this. The quiet, paralyzed fear that characterized Brian. The reckless, angry rant against the Monster that backfired: With a broken wrist for Brian, with a new way for the Monster to control Quentin.
Jason gave this wonderful interview where he talked about how even in panic, Brian and Quentin are different characters--that Brian is paralyzed by his fear, while Quentin channels it into doing something productive. And I think we’re seeing the natural combination of those two very different coping mechanisms: Quentin has been increasingly paralyzed by the situation, and he’s been falling back, episode by episode, into the quiet, horrifying acceptance of the situation that Brian showed back in the first episode of the season. Because he’s just so done, he’s so tired, and there is increasingly no way to fight without making everything so, so much worse.
