Mothers Garden (The Funky Sounds Of Female Africa 1975 - 1984) by Various Artists
Where are the women in vintage African funk? The much-loved Nigeria 70: The Definitive Story of Funky Lagos made room for only one female-fronted outfit (the Lidaju Sisters’ “Orere Elijigbo”) over 23 tracks. The 20-volume Ethiopiques series had none. Female singers pop up in ones and twos across the great African Pearls series – Fanta Damba making two appearances on One Day in Mali Radio, Sory Kandia and Miriam Makeba on the Guinee Revolution set—but not many. Given the social, economic and educational inequalities that persist even now between genders in Africa, perhaps that’s not surprising. Still it makes compilations like Mothers Garden: the Funky Sounds of Female Africa 1975-1984 all the more valuable. There may not have been a lot of women making music in public in Africa 40 years ago, but there were some — and some good ones.
