ICP Announces 2016 Infinity Award Winners

The International Center of Photography (ICP) announces the 2016 honorees of its annual Infinity Awards, to be held in New York City on Monday, April 11, 2016.  Widely considered the leading honor for excellence in the field, the Infinity Awards is ICP’s largest annual fundraiser, supporting all of its programs, including exhibitions, education, collections, and community outreach.

“The Infinity Awards is a very special night each year at which we celebrate the achievements of remarkable talent across photography and visual arts,” said ICP Executive Director Mark Lubell. “ICP is proud to recognize and celebrate this outstanding group of individuals making an impact on the world of visual culture.”

The 2016 honorees were chosen by an esteemed selection committee including Charlotte Cotton, Curator in Residence and Director of Programming for ICP’s new museum at 250 Bowery (opening this summer); Teju Cole, Photography Critic for The New York Times Magazine; and Brian Sholis, Curator of the Cincinnati Art Museum. The Lifetime Achievement honoree was selected by ICP’s Board of Trustees and senior staff.

This week's Modern Art Notes Podcast spotlights a new exhibition at New York's apexart titled "The Permanent Way." The show looks at the continuing impact of the railroads on the way American artists look at landscape. The exhibition is on view through July 28.

My guests are Brian Sholis, who curated the show, and Mark Ruwedel, a photographer who is included in the exhibition and whose "Westward the Course of Empire" series spotlighted the continuing physical presence of the railroad in the  West. Sholis's essay for "The Permanent Way" is available (for free) here.

This picture of Ruwedel's, Chicago Milwaukee St. Paul and Pacific #17 is not in "The Permanent Way," but is on view now at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, in the museum's third-floor, permanent collection photography galleries. Ruwedel and I discuss images such as this one on this week's program, including where the heck the railroad tracks -- which would have run across the top of these bridge supports -- disappeared to. He is the co-editor of "The Uncertain States of America Reader," a 2006 anthology of writing on contemporary art and politics. He contributes to Artforum, where he was previously an editor and to magazines such as Aperture, Art in America, Bookforum and Frieze. His essay for "The Permanent Way" is available (for free) here.

Among the topics Sholis and I discuss is how the railroads promoted the West to Midwesterners and Easterners via spectacle -- such as this orange-covered train -- and via new technologies which enabled the printing of postcards.

This relationship, between the railroad, the landcape, and the mediating lens of the camera, is the subject of "Permanent Way," a new exhibition at apexart in Tribeca, that places contemporary American railway photography in the context of historical images and documents from the nineteenth century, when the railway first made its way across the country.  It's an unusual show in that it is historical in nature but not particularly pedantic — there are no meandering wall texts — this no doubt reflecting the background of curator Brian Sholis, a former editor at Artforum and now a doctoral student in American history. "Permanent Way" runs through July 28 at apexart (291 Church Street, NYC). On July 8, Sholis will lead a New York walking tour tied to the show.
