Maja’s mouth twisted hearing his words “mistress,” her voice didn’t sound like her own. “You bonded with her.” She blinked several times trying valiantly to keep the tears at bay.
“No I … I … I never,” he shook his head. “I don’t know what she did to me to want …” his voice broke. He couldn’t describe the attraction and compulsion he felt for Ella. He certainly didn’t feel that way now. “She only ever said she might take me as her own but we never…” His words faded as regret set in. “I’m sorry,” he repeated, “I should have been stronger. I should have listened.”
Sighing Maja sat down as if her legs could no longer support her weight. She stared glumly up at Brian who did nothing to interrupt her thinking. “We can’t change the past,” she said almost to herself “I can’t say I forgive you nor can I find it in myself to blame you. You were in a difficult situation with no one to help you.”
“Where does that leave us now?” he asked biting his down on his tongue to keep from asking for another chance. A chance to prove himself.
“I’m not in a position to just walk away nor do I want to,” she gave him a sad little smile. “You’re the father of my baby. I want my child to know their father.”
