Fanfic: I Got My Heart’s Desire, And There My Troubles Began Pt.2
Challenge: 2018 VDay Chalenge by the amazing writer and my friend and proofreader @prettyxlittlexwriter
Prompt: Feb 7: A song that makes you sad
Song: Heroes - David Bowie and here is another great cover version I like too
Pairing: Maylor (Brian May x Roger Taylor)
The title is a line from Lev Grossman’s book -The Magicians- which I had never heard of until Feb. 1, when searching for a title for this three-part series. And yeah, maybe it’s too long for people to remember, but since I liked it, here we are. We can call it IGMHDATMTB. Yeah. Still too long. Troubles maybe ??
Is this introduction getting too long ?? Probably.
This is the second part of three.
You can read Part 1 here.
This takes place in 1977, right after a press conference for Queen’s album News Of The World.
The four of them got into their house. The band had just come back home from their press conference for their 6th studio album, News Of The World. Freddie, Brian and John were disappointed and down-hearted while Roger was furious. Roger was hurt and fed up with the press. Critics were relentless with them and constantly mocked everything the band did, from their clothes and appearance to their music. The drummer had reached his breaking point and couldn’t take it anymore.
“What the fuck is wrong with them? Are we that bad? What is their problem with us?” Roger was practically shouting, his voice breaking while speaking, and he was on the verge of tears.
Roger was trembling and moving uncontrollably in the living room. Since Brian was more composed than the blonde boy was, when he saw the chance, the curly guitarist grabbed Roger and wouldn’t let him move. After he stopped fighting back, Brian embraced the drummer in an attempt to calm him down. Roger responded actively in that embrace, burying his head in Brian’s chest and letting out tears of frustration.
“Do you want to go to our bedroom to discuss this?” Brian suggested and Roger nodded against Brian’s chest.
In the meantime, Freddie and John were discussing the matter, sitting at the kitchen table with a hot cup of coffee each. The press was indeed very much against them. The reporters used everything they could lay their hands upon to make them uncomfortable.
In Roger and Brian’s bedroom, the atmosphere was tensed. Brian was trying to hide his wrecked spirit and appear composed, even though Roger did not seem to be able to notice such things at present. “Rog? We have been through this shit countless times so far. Why? What happened? Care to tell me how you feel?”
“I know they have been throwing shit at us for quite some time to have gotten used to it. But Brian… what if they’re right?” Roger replied, emitting a sob.
“So that is what bothers you love? If their claims are true? What do you think? Aren’t you confident in what we have achieved the last four years? Would you prefer having the press with us and the public against us or ignoring us? Are you afraid we or you particularly aren’t good enough?” Roger wasn’t exactly an open book. His bubbly personality and outgoing character almost always managed to muffle his agitated soul, covering his insecurities and worries.
“To be honest, I’m afraid I am not enough for you, the band. I have extreme faith in you guys, but I am not sure if my drumming abilities are on the same level as the three of you. My point is, I wonder if there is any percentage of truth in the words of those fucking critics.” the blonde concluded, emitting another sob.
Brian’s previous feelings of disappointment subsided, making space for evergrowing anger towards the press, that had achieved to surface his boyfriend’s invalid insecurities. The curly boy wanted to swap all those misconceptions his lover had formed about himself at once. “Rog, you are a great drummer. Without you behind the kit, we wouldn’t have done any of the things we have achieved so far. Actually, we wouldn’t even have tried to achieve those because, if I remember correctly, we only formed Smile after I met you and was amazed by your splendid drumming skills. Then, we got Freddie along his great voice and piano, and John’s sick basslines. What I’m trying to say is that Queen wouldn’t have worked the same or, more possibly, at all, with some other people.” Roger smiled at Brian’s argument. He had summed up their whole career in a few lines.
“I guess you have a point Brimi. But what if I can’t make it any further?” Roger answered, still not convinced.
Brian had the perfect response. “Roger what was the reason you came all the way to London from Cornwall?”
“To find a band to play for!”
“Exactly! And well, you have. The question now is, are you enjoying it, do you love doing this, or is it making you anxious nowadays?”
“Yes, yes I do. I know my worries will pop up every now and then but I will be fine. Either way, most of the time I get to be with you, Freddie and John, not the reporters. It’s just that I am fed up with the assholes we have to deal with. This whole system is making me sick, wanting to throw up at just how dirty and corrupted it is.” The drummer seemed to be getting emotional again.
Brian was about to say something, when a better idea popped in his mind. He picked up Roger and headed to their living room, despite the younger boy objecting. In reality, Roger couldn’t do anything, the lanky guitarist, in spite of his fragile appearance was strong enough to carry him. The curly man finally put him on the floor and then sat beside him and searched through the pile of vinyls, searching for a very specific one and couldn’t help but wonder how it had been on the bottom when it had been for less than a month in their collection. “Babe, I want you to listen to this record with your heart and soul this time. I know you have listened to it many many times so far, but I think it makes much more sense now.” Brian turned to Roger and finally played the record on the turntable. It was Heroes. Roger loved David Bowie and Brian knew the power a song could have over anyone. Roger felt like Brian was really speaking to him, promising him he would be there for him anytime, ready to fight anyone who would dare to go against them or their love.
“Though nothing will drive them away, we can beat them, just for one day. We can be heroes, just for one day. ‘Cause we’re lovers, and that is a fact. Yes we’re lovers, and that is that. We can be Heroes. We’re nothing, and nothing will help us. We can be heroes.”
I hope this didn’t have any spelling or grammatical errors, but I’m sure it does. Anyway…
I really hope you liked this part, please tell me what you thought of it with an ask (anon or not), private message, comment, even with a like. I don’t care whether it is bad or good, I wanna know if it’s worth losing so many hours of studying for school lately to write 14 fics.
You can reblog if you want, I would appreciate it more than you could think… So, if you feel like reblogging don’t hesitate. Much love…
