I think about this quote from Gavroche (best boy) a lot. How just earlier in the chapter the group that came to chastise him for being a "beggars brat" were complaining about their standard of living, how they could not afford good meat, how they were struggling to survive, yet they hate the idea of a revolution because they think it will make life more expensive. The poor have been pitted against the poor for centuries and it has never stopped.

It’s so funny the way Hugo describes Jean Valjean striding off in his National Guard uniform with his gun and cartridges to go to the barricade. I know of course what he’s going there to do, but since Valjean is not shown making the decision, a reader back then who knew nothing about the story would have naturally thought, “Wow. He’s going off to shoot Marius himself”
