My Thoughts

I will freely admit – the stakes in this book are higher than I’ve been used to lately. The tension was palpable for me. But it also meant I didn’t want to put this book down. I wanted to know what happened next. I wanted to know how it ended! I haven’t felt this kind of impatience reading a book in a long time, and had I not needed to work, I would have stayed up all night and read it in one sitting.

Misery Lark has never felt like she’s belong anywhere. And this arranged marriage to the Alpha Were of the territory is just another example of that. But Misery is on a mission, and nothing will distract her from that. Well, almost nothing.

At first, I thought she was a self-sacrificing idiot. At first, everything in me screamed at her to put her foot down and stand up for herself. But then I realized that she was doing exactly that – just in a an extremely roundabout way in order for her to achieve her goals. And though her circumstances may seem a little less than ideal at the moment, she’s still herself through and through.

Because Misery is incapable of being anything other than completely and authentically herself. And even though she lacks any semblance of self-preservation, she does so with a sass, snark, and sarcasm that absolutely delight me through and through. And that doesn’t even begin to get into the true plot of the book.

Lowe and Misery make very unlikely allies, but it’s absolutely necessary, for both of their end goals. And, quite surprisingly, those goals tend to line up far more often than not. And the more they get to know each other, and learn about each other, the more their relationship grows in a positive way.

What was ultimately surprising was the amount of political intrigue, and all of the twists and turns we took to solve a number of mysteries – many of which seem to be leading directly into a sequel. And I can’t say I’m upset about it.

A number of resolutions may have come from the conclusion of this book, but there seem to be a handful of mysteries left to solve. And a couple of stories that need telling, now that Lowe’s and Misery’s have been settled. And honestly, at this point, I’m quite invested, and quite interested in seeing what happens next.
