The Bride Chooses the Bridesmaids!
One thing that I have been certain of since before we even got engaged was who I would ask to be my bridesmaids. It was a no-brainer for me to ask my two younger sisters, my future sister-in-law, and my best friend whom I’ve known since I was 8 years old. But the question was, how would I ask them?
I wanted to make asking my bridesmaids a little bit special, unique and quirky and incorporating some of my own personality. Two of the four bridesmaids are enormous Harry Potter fans like myself, and I took inspiration from a photograph that I saw at another person’s wedding. The photograph shows the bride and bridesmaids all holding Harry Potter wands pointing at the camera, something that I wanted to replicate at my own wedding, however none of us own any wands! That triggered my lightbulb moment - get the bridesmaids a Harry Potter wand each, and have it delivered by owl! For most of January I was glued to my phone, bidding on wands on eBay (I couldn’t afford four brand new wands from the official Warner Brothers studio, I’m by no means well off!) and after some frustration and missed bids, I finally acquired four different wands for the girls.
To add a little bit of myself to the mix, I made a soft owl for each bridesmaid and even managed to personalise them by sewing their names onto their respective owls. The final touch was a letter; the letter was an exact copy of the letter that Harry Potter receives in the first novel, informing him that he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I edited and customised this to request the company of my lovely ladies as bridesmaids at my wedding, and even included an (edited) equipment list and reading list. The final touch was an envelope sealed with the official Hogwarts crest wax seal, and some brown wrapping paper and string as used in the films.
I was so proud of these creations; a lot of hard work and effort went into making these, and I frequently went to bed with sore fingers from sewing and typing. And it was all so worthwhile! All of my beautiful girls said yes, and they loved the way in which I asked them, so I’m ever so chuffed. I’m a lucky lucky lady indeed to have those four beauties as my bridesmaids, to help me through this momentous event.
