Punchbowl with the brigantine Tryphena, after 1766
This punchbowl, found in a privy pit behind an illegal tavern in Philadelphia, celebrates the vessel Tryphena. She set sail for Liverpool, England, in 1765 carrying a message from Philadelphia merchants that urged their counterparts in Great Britain to abolish the Stamp Act.
Due to the growing protests against this additional tax burden and the steadily worsening relations with America, the Stamp Act was repealed on 18 March 1766. But it no longer had much influence. Since the Americas declared themselves independent on 4 July 1776.
