Singer-Songwriter from Berlin: Homestayer

Philipp Dunkel is currently living in Berlin and constantly touring in Germany. If you like Punkrock and folk you should check his music out when he is playing near you. Philipp, for how long are you making music as Homestayer now? I started Homestayer in summer 2015 right after I moved to Berlin. At that point my former solo project Perfect Youth had become a band and I didn't want to play solo shows as Perfect Youth so I just started another "band". In total, this is my third solo project, haha. Do you really rather like to stay at home than going outside? I still prefer going outside. Going to shows, meeting friends or going skateboarding. But sometimes I just love staying at home and pretending that I'm older than I actually am. That's one of the advantages when you're almost 30: you don't feel obliged to actually do something anymore. You just don't care. And neither do your friends. In fact, my girlfriend is applying a deep cleansing facial masque to my face while I'm typing these words. You also played in Hardcore and Punkrock bands. Do you miss that sometimes? My old hardcore band Finding Faith (no, it's not a Christian hardcore band) just reunited and we're currently writing new songs. We won't play longer tours like we did seven years ago but still it's great to get the old gang together from time to time. Especially considering that they live 700kms away from Berlin. And I also started singing in Withers. I have to admit I could have it much easier than singing in an Austrian bands but I loved these dudes from the beginning when we were touring with them as MNMNTS in 2013 so I just couldn't say no. We're playing our first show together in September. Are there singer / songwriters you really like? Although I'm not a big fan of the whole genre as such there are indeed a lot of musician I like. I will just name a few: Ghost of a Chance, Perry o' Parson, Brightr, The Lion and the Wolf, Left Out, Complaints and of course my good friend Thomas from Friends & Liars who is probably the most underrated singer/songwriter which he doesn't deserve. There's no other person I've played so many shows with. I love watching him playing and disturb him by singing along way too loud, haha. Are there singer / songwriters that you don't like? Yes, there's one  person in particular. But of course I won't say that person's name because said person is having a go at other musicians in public. A person not worth supporting in any way. You live in Berlin at the moment. Does the city inspire you? It's rather the opposite. Most of the time I'm just overwhelmed with all the impressions. And instead of channelling them and writing new songs my mind sometimes just feels blocked. What are your goals with your music? I think it's still the same it has been for the last 15 years. Meeting people, getting around, trying to release at least one whole album which I haven't done so far. Do you have any more tours planned for the 2nd half of 2016? I'm about to finish my studies this year and I'm not sure if I have the time to do that. But once I've handed in my master's thesis I will start recording my first album which will be released at the beginning of 2017 via Midsummer Records. Once it's out I've finally reached one of my goals. Any last famous words? I try to come up with something clever and then people will quote me someday, haha.
