Task: remove trailing zeros.  I just got my ass handed to me by nylon100's surprising solution.  Two steps, instead of an external call to sed v='1230045000'; l="${v##*[!0]}"; v="${v%$l}"; echo "$v" Though sed has nicer syntax for this, external calls can really slow things down.
